I have vista 64bit ultimate on my rig.
Now my issue is mkv files will not play in 32bit wmp but they will in 64bit.

I have installed k-lite 3.9.5 (latest version), also tried vista pack, for 32bit and have tried both the vista pack and k-lite 64bit add ons for 64bit codecs.
With just the 32bit installed wmp (32bit) can play all the mkv's fine, as soon as a 64bit pack is installed it screws up and just plays sound. However wmp (64bit) can play the mkv's fine (obviously not when no 64bit codec)

Uninstall 64bit codecs and 32bit is fine again.

Anyone got any suggestions for me to try as this is going to annoy the hell out of me, it never used to do this, 64bit just wouldn't play mkv full stop .
I know its got to be a conflict but I can't figure out what it is :(

I would suggest using vlc player instead, it will play .mkv on vista x64 without any codec packs

I don't need vlc, the codecs play, I just can't have x64 and x86 versions together. Besides I don't like vlc, it was rubbish the last time I tried it.

Remove all codec packs and codecs that you installed, then download and install cccp comunity codec pack. you wont get any further issues and it will work fine with wmp. no need for vlc etc

But will this work in 64bit or allow the 64bit to work with the 32bit. There isn't any issue as such with the codec, they just don't seem to want to work together - I have to have 64bit installed for vista media center use (rare as it is).

their is practically no 64bit codecs that work properly, they are all early alpha and beta builds. however what your trying to do you will need to configure each codecs options to only allow playback with each specfic version of media player. if not then thats when your getting the problems.

what your trying to do just doesnt seem worth it, but cccp pack has all the options you need to allow codec specific options, that will only work on 32bit. then when u install your 64bit codecs you need to do the same, keep them only launching on 64bit. still cant guarantee it will work. i have confused myself now lol

apart from issues with mkv, all the 64bit codecs which I've tried (even using the most recent 64bit codec pack) run just as smoothly as the 32bit version, the lack of realmedia (got a fair few files in this format) in 64bit is the main reason for not switching over.
