mkv player

shark codecs plus windows media player here... basically it uses the lav filters/decoders.
Plays mkv's without any issues for me, including ones with built in subs.

Alternative there's VLC although personally I prefer media player classic.
 
Are the MPC-HC / BE codecs built into the software these days, or do you still need to install separate codecs? I've always stuck with VLC as the codecs are all built in.
 
Well in that case, go MPC-HC/BE. It's much quicker in my experience. VLC seems to need reinstalling quite often to keep fast startup times.
