My new TV supports AVI and MP4 playback from the USB and rather than take my PC to the TV I thought I would play stuff from an external hard drive I have, however everything I rip goes straight into MKV, rather than re-rip multiple discs I'd prefer to just batch some remux of my MKVs so I can leave the computer doing it's thing while I'm at work. My MKVs are all in h264 and the only method I've found is Handbrake reconverting so I'm just wondering if there is any way to remux rather than convert every episode?

I thought demuxing was taking the video, audio and other bits out of a file container and muxing was adding them into a file container? Conversion is converting from one format to another not from one file container to the other.

I tried Avidemux but it only gives the option to go back to MKV files which isn't helpful.

Technically yes, mux/demux is just changing the codecs contained in a container, whilst convertying is changing the container (and codecs)

What I meant was both take the same time....

Avidemux should allow you to choose any type of codecs and containers to convert too.

Use the drop down options, for both video and audio.

How do they both take the same amount of time? If all I'm doing is taking the video and the audio from one container and adding to another container rather than removing, converting and adding, how is that going to be as slow?

Avidemux is working now, no idea why it wasn't giving the option before. And as I suspected it took 10 seconds to remux rather than 20 minutes.

I use mkv2vob to convert MKV's to avi for playing on the PS3. Works really well and is nice and quick. Also completely free.
