ML + ATV3 + Airplay problems / half solution

I've been having a problem with Airplay audio not working from my MBP to my ATV3.

I'm not sure if anyone has, or has had, a similar problem but I've found a half fix that might be useful and could lead us all to a better solution.

Bit of info:

• 2008 MBP 3,1 running Mountain Lion 10.8.2
  
• ATV 3 running 5.1.1 (5433)
  
• Time Capsule (second generation) running 7.6.1
  
• Virgin SuperHub (Netgear device)

My ATV3 is connected via Ethernet direct to the SuperHub.

The Time Capsule is also connected to the SuperHub and is providing my WiFi network (dual band).

My MBP is connected to the network over WiFi and was using the 5GHz network. I did a bit of reading and it was suggested that I take the ATV3 off ethernet and connect via the 5GHz network.

I tried this but for some reason the ATV3 could connect to the WiFi network but not get an ip address so I plugged it back in to the ethernet and switched the MBP to the 2.4GHz network and it instantly started working.

I can't work out if it's an issue with ML broadcasting Airplay over the 5GHz channel or if the problem is the ATV3 receiving the signal over 5GHz when it's connected via ethernet.

While I can get it working I'd rather be using the 5GHz channel for my MBP so I'm not classing it as resolved just yet.

Anyone got any ideas?

I sometimes have the same problem here (MBA 2012). Restarting the laptop fixes the issue but sometimes restarting the application that I wish to stream to the TV works too.

I didn't think old MBPs could Airplay . Eg. I didn't think my 2009 one could.

You can't Airplay video but you can Airplay any audio from your Mac.

I tried restarting all of the hardware and software at various points in my search for a solution to no avail but switching to 2.4GHz fixed it instantly.
