Went to install a ML110 G6 and found out it doesn't support raid, even though the bios has all the raid setup tools there, there is no on-board controller.

All of HP's documents refer to a HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller. And I guess you need some sort of licence as I saw that in the raid setup?

My question is, can any raid controller card be used, something along the lines of an Adaptec?

Have you flashed it with the latest HP System ROM? Some versions of the ML110 G6 need the new firmware to activate things properly (even though RAID is mentioned in the BIOS).

I stuck an Adaptec 1430SA into ML115 G5 last week - worked nicely, cost around £80.

Well, I changed the harddrives to raid in the bios and after that I could get into the raid utility. I then setup the array etc but the HP disc doesn't detect any controller. So I'm guessing its up to date but it is that I have no controller.

I'll disable the raid as someone's ordered a controller.

Same issues as this chap it seems - http://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Storage_Technology/Q_25121908.html

for future ref.....

installed the hp smart array p212, don't forget to order the cables aswell because they aren't included. Disable any onboard/bios raid because its not needed.
