One of my customers has an ML370G5 server, and it has rebooted a few times of its own accord. Looking in the HP logs it seems one of the hard drives in the RAID5 array has had 3 hardware faults and requires replacing. The array has a spare configured but it seems the spare is only used when one of the drives actually fails. Is it a case I can just power off the server, take out the faulty drive. Then when the server reboots it will assign the spare as the missing drive and I can assign another new drive as a spare at my leisure?

just pull the drive? shoudl stay up and move the hot spare into the raid set and rebuild it. once this is done pop another drive and it will then assign the new one as a hot spare.

If it's RAID 5 do as above, just pull the drive. You can also possibly force it to fail over using the Array CLI utility.
A tip would be to use the array config utility to flash the drive lights to ID the faulting drive so you don't pull the wrong one. You'd be surprised how many stories I hear of people doing that and downing the box.

Though I'd still be concerned if it's rebooting itself, that's not normal for an Array disk failure and could be indicative of something more serious.
