I've come for help finding the right parts for a friends new PC its primary purpose is for playing WoW & some other MMO/RPG's he just needs the Base Unit (no keyboard, mouse, monitor etc) & I can give him my old Samsung 830 SSD (he also has a really old HDD he can use to save money) also got Win7. the budget is £500, & if possible he would prefer Intel & Nvidia parts.

Would Like to get it orderd by the weekend.
Thanks for reading :)

Maybe something like this? I prefer a K series CPU to enable overclocking, the G3258 is a nice chip especially with discrete graphics and with most games/apps (unless heavily multi-threaded) you will not notice any difference to a 4670K. You will need an aftermarket cooler if you overclock the G3258.

I went with the r9 280 as it simply has more "grunt" than the GTX 760 at the same price point...

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Radeon R9 280 Gaming 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £159.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97-D3H Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £89.99
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 730W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £79.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £59.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £49.99
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £49.99
Total : £489.90 (includes shipping : ).

The above spec is pretty decent, but here's something different.

This is more powerful in general and shouldn't need to upgrade the cpu for a long time, but removes future crossfire/sli options, most people will never go down the 2 card route anyway so why pay more for features you never use.

The Asus H81M-K Intel H81 will let you do some overclocking, though I would recommend getting a 3rd party heatsink for this, the stock should be ok to start with.

The case is small and compact and you can hid the cables behind the motherboard (and unused cables down the side of the PSU)
It comes with 2 quiet case fans that give decent cooling to the graphics card and CPU with options to add more if required.
It has space to take practically any graphics card.

I have just used one to build a work PC and I was impressed how good it was for a premium budget case.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £169.99
1 x MSI Radeon R9 280 Gaming 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £159.95
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £59.99
1 x EVGA 500W 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply (100-B1-0500-KR) £41.99
1 x Asus H81M-K Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £37.99
1 x Cooler Master N200 NSE-200-KKN1 Midi-Tower - Black £36.95
Total : £520.36 (includes shipping : £11.25).

If you don't want overclocking swap the CPU for this, putting the total around £480.

Thanks for the replys, I have to admit my friend isnt very PC friendly (sometimes I think he just has one for World of Warcraft) So I am pretty sure he will never overclock, or go crossfire/sli.

also how are the mini computers for cleaning? Ive lost count of how many times Ive had to clean his PC out for dust/dirt/tobaco&dog hair (its like a hotbox/petting zoo in there lol)

True, I did compromise on the CPU but not the rest :)

As a complete system can draw over 400w I decided to give some headroom on the PSU. In theory a PSU can last years and they aren't cheap if you need to upgrade it. Same applies to the motherboard, the CPU will last a year or so and then dump a Broadwell in it as a CPU upgrade. The G3258 should not starve the r9 280 especially at 1920x1080.

But Sasahara has listed a good build. £500 is that borderline budget where you need to compromise on parts somewhere :(

Regarding the dust etc filters on the intake fan(s) is about the only thing that will help and then it will only slow it down...

If he doesnt want to overclock, this CPU + RAM + mobo bundle is a good deal:

You might be able to get 10% off the MSI 280 with this code as well:

MSI10

When I say "might" you'll have to try it as Gibbo was being cryptic about it :p

£500 is that borderline budget where you need to compromise on parts somewhere :(

the budget is a little flexible If anything Id say he could probably go close to £600 at a push

the main thing is getting him something that hes happy with, future upgrades etc isnt something thats likley to happen, unless an amazingly rare game comes along that demands it (but hes so fussy that its unlikley).

Nice spot. If overclocking isn't something he's interested in this is a good build.

There isn't much in it, but the XFX Radeon R9 280X DD Black Edition 3072MB does come with a nice 60GB SSD, ideal for installing wow on. :D
