Hi guys an girls, Now iv never really been the biggest RPG fan in the world (Always been a FPS man myself) But recently iv been looking more and more into buying some of the best ones to see 'what all the fuss is about' really..

Now iv had some good friends that played WOW and i know abit about the game 'mainly how addictive is it' So i guess wow just wow has to be on my list of games too i guess, The only problem i have is having to pay for it.. £10 or something right? I could be wrong but do you get a free 30 days with every version of wow right? And is it worth getting any expansions (if any, i know theres a new one coming out but older ones?)

Iv got Guild Wars NightFall which is ok but i havent really got into it yet so its not really that fun right now (plus i seriously cant find a class that i like aswell! I wanna be a fighter but dont wanna be a warrior, kinda like magic/fighting if thats possible?! :)

I dont really know what classes there are in WOW but i do know there are 2 sides to pick? Alliance are hord or something? So im guessing there are a lot of good classes to pick from?

Iv got Oblivian/Dark Messiah but got bored with both because im not really used to playing SP games tbh, SO i guess everyone is just gunna say 'Obviously get wow' Which is maybe quite obvious for some..

But i would like to know if there are any other good rpgs out? Is NWN2 any good as gameplay goes? Iv been reading the thread and reading a lot about bad gfx etc, but then when i see people write that its a really good game it makes me wanna go buy it!!

errrm thats about it really, wanna get into a MMOPRG/RPG but need some advice as to making it abit more interesting/involving (god im gunna have to join a guild to acheive that arnt i?!)

thanks

Jacob

WoW is great up to a point, unless you like the PvP grind or PvE raid grind once you get to 60.

If I could go back, I wouldnt have not played, as the first few run throughs are very enjoyable. :)

Guild Wars I tried and tried, but just cannot seem to get into.

Thos are the only 2 MMORPGs I've played.

As for SP RPGs that are not FPS (Oblivion/Dark Messiah), I really enjoyed Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 back a few years, and this weekend started playing NWN2, which I am loving.

The future aspects of persistant worlds you can play in with your mates online, on a more intimate scale than MMORPGs, seems lush as well :)

If you're new to the RPG genre, then try Baldurs Gate 1/2, Planescape Torment (might be a bit hard to find) and NWN1/2.

If you're after a MMORPG i'd suggest WoW, its the easiest to get into, although it isn't the most engrossing or indepth MMO out there its the best choice to introduce you to MMO's.

You could also try Arx Fatalis, very underrated game.

EQ2 is a good alternative to WoW. There is plenty of choice if you're into your magic classes and they have some really cool spells and pets.

I played EQ2 at launch for a few months, then had a break to play WoW and then recently went back to EQ2 .It has really progressed very nicely and is a really good game imho and well worth the monthly sub. It has a friendly and helpful community and is so much fun whether you're soloing or like to group.

I'd give WOW the nod. coming from 1st Person Shooters myself.
I've tried a few MMO's, and none of them touch WOW as far as I'm concerned.

For a beginner it's a sinch to play. You'll certainly enjoy your adventure to level 60. What you do at 60 is upto you, but the journey from 1-60 is excellent.

Edit.
WOW can easily be solo'd from 1-60. All you need is to find groups for the more difficult quests or to specific Instances (5 man dungons). Once you get to 60 you'd have probably already joined a guild and this is where the game can get interesting/boring.

ddo is a pathetic excuse for a mmo in my opinion , i would prefer to play rf online :D

dont get wow, its to easy to get addicted then find yourself in a hole.

Getting ****** at someone for taking 'your' loot or rushing home to raid is not fun.

yeah im not really that worried about doing stupid stuff like that, tbh i think thats quite sad really.. I just wanna be able to be kinda social but for it to be good enough for short periods (Not like EQ1/2 which i hear is very involved etc)

if you want to get anywere at WOW you need to be pretty dedicated to it, i stopped playing because it was taking over my life. I was doing like 8-9 hour stints it was just pathetic.

That goes for pretty much any MMORPG to be honest, well if you're the sort that wants decent gear (and you will).

As for what to play, you have to ask yourself what it is you're looking for. Going straight from playing fps's to a stat crunching rpg may not be the best move :)

You say you got bored playing single player RPG's, well I'd say either force yourself to play through the storyline in something (maybe not oblivion, that's not typical of the rpg genre) or just give it up and bow to the MMORPG :)
A lot of RPG's in general are stat heavy, requiring that you know how the underlying mechanics of the games work in order to get the most out of them. The reward is getting better items, and generally getting more powerful whilst being involved in a story.

I personally would say WOW is a good start, but dont think it's the be-all-and-end-all, my own view is of it being a MMORPG-lite, particularly PVP wise.

Thing is thats never going to happen tho, Iv been playing FPS's for years and played a very high level at one point in time. And even then i didnt play for 8-9 hours straight! Prolly not even 5-6! Its too much, dunno how you lot sit infront of a pc for so long (I know that played a RPG too a FPS is very different i know)

Saying that tho, if i do get WOW and i do sit there playing for hours on end, can someone come over my house and put a bullet in my head plz?

Im prolly gunna get NWN2 and see what its like, I used to really love Diablo that game rocked, so i hope its like that but a lot more detailed/interesting etc

WoW just WoW LOOKS like a good game, but there are so many things about it that dont want me to even pick it up in the shops! i mean any game that you ask about on a forum and people start saying 'Dont play it iv got no life anymore' Really doesnt make me think that i wanna go buy it!

plus i cant get this feeling out of my head that someone can suck my **** if they want to make me pay a monthly fee aswell :P

Ignore these people, go get WoW, it is probably the biggest PC game out right now, and it will be even bigger when TBC comes out. There is a free trial you can get from the website so give that a try.

Play it to 60, at 60 you can decide if you want to go raid or if you want to quit, if you raid then you might become "addicted" if you feel the need to be the person with the best epics and the most DKP, if you quit then you can say you have played it, and understand what everyone talks about in WoW threads :p

Heh yeah thats a fair point, Im prolly gunna get it but was worried about it taking up too much of my time, Now that i understand what part of the game that takes up all these *cough* geeks *cough* (sorry couldnt help myself) and now i know that im not interested in raiding and the best stats blah blah blah its made me want to play even more now, so thanks.

Mate, I use to play FPS at a decent level. Could never spend more than 3-4 hours in one sitting as I started to get bored, same maps etc etc The same is not said about MMORPG's, I've sat by my PC for a 48hour session once, more often than not I would spend up to 12 hours in one sitting. It's a totally diffrent type of game, you just don't realise where the time goes! Bad stuff tbh.

For my recommendation maybe start off with Diablo 1 and 2, it's a half decent cross between FPS and RPG, they are a little old but you can probibly pick them up for nearly nothing, same also goes for Dungeon Seige. If you enjoy that then go onto more in-depth RPGs like Baulders Gate, NWN.

I'll second this. WoWs a pretty good game but it gets so tedious at high levels. I recently tried EQ2 having originally played it at beta, when it was utter pants. Credit to SOE here they've improved it a lot, so I actually want to play it now. Only got to level 21, and the levelling is even easier than wow's so far - but the game is a lot more complex and in depth. Even tradeskills are kinda fun (well unique anyway - I'll prolly get bored of those soon). Graphics are still wang though (even with the SOCA models), and there's a lot more bugs/broken quests, but hey its a SOE game so you really have to expect that.

Ragnarok Online is a cutesy anime-esque MMORPG with a absolutely massive private server playerbase. It's a bit like an anime diablo with more grind.

Like I said, there are millions of private servers so it can't hurt to try it out
