I have recently been thinking about Eve .... again! (for about the 3rd or 4th time). But it got me thinking - i want a bit more than just controlling one ship - why isnt there a MMORTS type game where you control say a planet/empire/squadron... kinda Eve with a bit of OGame thrown in.

Is there such a thing?

If you get into Eve Online and have a corp in an alliance you can (not directly) control many corps, regions, planets, stations etc through your alliance. The politics in the game is really mind boggling. Alliances at war due to one wanting minerals in one place, deals through ISK (game money) to use trade routes through space, mining permits, hunting permits etc.

Never really played OGame but from what I understand Eve Online isn't really the same but it can be pretty in depth with the management of other ships and space etc if you really get into it.

I played *a lot* of mmorpgs - including Eve (think my char has about 1.5mil skill points?) I know this is only scratching the surface of Eve but I have never managed to get beyond that :(

Some people are playing now and started at Beta so I imagine many of them have 30mill+ skill points, if not more.

However, its not always these people infact quite the opposite. All you need is the power to start a corp (skills etc) and some ISK and then the money to start an alliance and again the skills. You then begin the fun part of political stance to alliance A, War with alliance B etc.

It might not be what you are looking for though but in the end, although you don't fly each ship, you can give them task's etc on what you want to do if you see what I mean.

Its got a massive learning curve but well worth it when your into it. I belive OcUK has a corp that is ideal for new comers to the game as well. Theres also a 14 day trial, im sure someone will be able to sort you out with a buddy key or whatever it's called.

Look for the thread just down the page with Travian as the title. Seems to be what you're looking for and free. I havent played it BTW just read instructions etc.

Thats a php web based one - I did OGame to death and not really looking for another of those.

Time of Defiance could be more your sort of thing. I remember trying it a while back but was too busy with others games to give it a fair chance. It does sound good though...

Time of Defiance (ToD) is a Massively MultiPlayer (MMP) real-time strategy game presented in a full 3D environment. It has been designed so that ALL players within the game are real.... Games can run anywhere from a week to four weeks with each game supporting many hundreds of players. The idea of the game is simply to expand your empire by battling or trading with other players and to hold the largest, most powerful empire when the game ends.
