After playing GW2 and it not really being the game for me, I have space for a new mmo in my gaming life.

I have decided I would like to play a mmo with the guild wars payment model, that is you pay for the game but there is no subscription fees.

One that caught my eye is the secret world but people seem mixed if its a good game or not.

Can I get a list of games that have the guild wars payment scheme - pay once no subscription so I can see what MMO I should be playing?

Reason I don't want to pay for a sub is I'm a bit of a "drop in, drop out" player these days and don't have marathon gaming sessions anymore.

Thanks :)

PS Also if there is a website that already has a list then could I have a link pretty please :)

personally I'd not touch TSW with a bargepole, but that's mostly due to bad experience with funcom in the past (I used to work within their GM structure, so have seen the inside, suffice to say, the guild puts it quite well). Then again, I've played both their other offerings to the MMO market, and not massively impressed with either these days.

I love TSW personally, even though it had a rocky as hell start (Funcom, burn 'em! etc).

Some of the systems take a bit of getting used to, and combat is still a bit clunky, but the atmosphere and acting is streets ahead of any other mmo out there. Half decent community too.

Sadly I can't get you the exact URL right now but www.mmorpg.com has a very useful filtering system where you can really narrow down what you want (i.e. by status, payment model, any fees, etc.).

I grabbed The Secret World recently for $14 and so far so good. It might not be the best MMo ever made but it has a different feel to it then most run of the mill games.

Apart from that I'd defo give Lord of the Rings online a mention and the brilliant Aion.

MMO with no subscription fees? It'll get outdated quickly due to no good content.

Not at all, look at WoW for example, they release nothing at all comparative to the money they make from subscriptions and software sales. Not saying they don't release much content, but for the amount they rake in from subs/software, they should be releasing monthly expansions to WoW for example, but they don't, its every few years. They take a massive income for nothing short of over glorified sever maintenance.

They do have a huge customer base though and releasing content every month would surely be counter productive as not all the customer base would see that content, with expansion packs they are given a longer shelf life and usually more of the customer base can see the content. Also, they remade an entire game with Catacylsm, they regularly redevelope entire features and sections of the game, which has huge effects on other aspects of game play.

Also; they expansion packs are of a very high standard of finished game.

It's not just 'server maintenance' but it's the development and production of higher quality services. The customer base is huge too and having such a huge customer base brings along it's own money sinks.

I don't mind paying for something that is high quality and provides a good service.

It'd be a lot better if they released a new questline or two weekly or a new dungeon/raid, they rake in tenfold what they give back. Take a look at RuneScape, *puts on flame-proof clothing*; there is more content in that game than WoW, and more than 99% of the userbase will ever experience more than 30% of it, that doesn't stop them from releasing new quests weekly and new mini-games monthly, and they rake in considerably less. The thing that stopped me playing WoW is that they don't try and appeal to that much of an audience as everything feels and works exactly the same, whereas RuneScape can feel like 20 different games depending on what part you're experiencing.

Good points but let's not derail the topic. :p

The Old Republic

/joking.

Like you I am a MMO player who is currently homeless. GW2 was fine to begin with but the lack of endgame is annoying, and while I do enjoy the WvWvW it all seems a bit pointless. If only it had open world pvp. That really is what I enjoy:)

A new dungeon or raid every week is a terrible idea omaeka and probably a large reason why they don't do it

Gw1 OP :p much better game

What is the point in churning out below par standard content that nobody gets to see?

Case in point.

The secret world just went buy to play, with dlc updates costing less than 5-10 quid every month which are optional. nice game, more challenging than other modern mmos, reminds me a bit of ffxi online, with the classless system, be everything with 1 character. stories, cut scenes etc, but with a urban horror theme and instead of armour you wear jeans and instead of goblins there's zombies!

The Old Republic.

Great stories F2P now, that said I would recommend spending at least $5 on the in game market to get you "Prefered Status" giving you a few more quality of life updates over the base model.

Yeah, cos it totally has the same payment model as GW2, and doesn't do anything at all to push you into subbing
