All over the world...
Well finally went and done it, yesterday went into a cpw store and asked if they had the new iphone in, which they did. So i bought one...well i didnt really, got it free on the 45 pound per month tariff which i thought wasnt too bad. Been after one since i got back from Canada where my sis in law picked one up on launch day and was quite impressed with it.

Anyways i digress...i know the new iphone hasnt got any mms or video recording facilities on it...shameful really but thats apple for u lol.

Anyways does anyone know of any apps out there that will video record or do mms on the new iphone??. If not does anyone know when there will be apps available...the phone would be a killer if it had these 2 features.

Also whilst im here, any word on the jailbreaking or unlocking of the phone??

Thanks

you can jailbreak the 3g iphone and there should be video recording apps for it. Not sure on the quality though, as for mms there were apps for the previous firmware that would do it but can't say I used them myself.

the 3g is currently not unlockable to other carriers apart from O2.

Thanks mate....any guides out there that explain how to jailbreak the iphone?....I'm a total noob when it comes to iPhone stuff lol

if you "jailbreak" the phone, what are the implications of doing this against warranty and the phone if any?

Out of interest, are there any free video recording apps for the phone?
There really is no excuse for Apple to have not implemented it. It's been standard on even cheapo bog standard phones for years now yet this "high-end" piece of equipment lacks it...

I used swirlyMMS on my 2G Iphone and have been impressed with it, hopefully that'll work with latest firmware soon. :)

Should be noted that Swirly MMS will not work if you are on an official O2 iPhone tarriff as they do not and will not (iknow, iasked) enable MMS on an iPhone tariff though they will let you change to another tariff but then you will lose all the iphone tariff benefits of visual voicemail, free wifi and internet etc. :(

Rubbish, i rang them and asked for it to be switched on. They were only too happy to do it.

It may also depend on who is taking the call, some of them are robots and some are very helpfull. I told them i jailbroke my phone and was trying out some beta software for MMS :)

If you can swing it might be worth saying your using a P990i or something.

In case anyone else wants to give it a go I used the following settings for contract 2G:

MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
APN: wap.o2.co.uk
Username: o2wap
Password: password

Image size was set to medium, user agent set as N95, it may work with other sizes but i've not had time to test further. I couldn't get it to work to start with till I turned off wifi, then it was all good :)

Looks like I spoke too soon, within 48 hours of posting MMS is now not working on iphone tarrif and the dedicated iphone staff haven't got a clue  they even went so far as to tell me it was a phone limitation and was physically impossible ...

So what we are saying is that MMS is contractualy restricted, it's not just a restricted functionality on the iPhone itself?

How pants is that?

What i'm saying is from a systems perspective each 'tariff' is in fact built out of a number of back end codes on the provisioning system they use.

For example tariff code 'ONLI25' could include the service codes for '200MIN' '100SMS' and '2MBDAT' it'll also include 'LINERE' to give you a service at all (line rental) 'WAPDAT' to enable the use of WAP or whatever and 'ROAMIN' to allow international roaming. This is normally done to save the operator time/reduce errors as entering one tariff code is a lot simpler than entering 6 individual product codes. The above codes are of course made up but that's how it's worked on every Telecom based industry i've ever worked in.

I notice a few people on the o2 forums have been able to add mms onto iphone tariffs so it can be done. Just got to find someone who's prepared to do it now.

For the record I can still send MMS's but i'm now stuck using o2's online service to view the ones i'm sent.

Update:
Attempting to go through the web contact system, first reply is the normal generic guff, hoping the second may get escalated to someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Sorted. Don't bother to email them it's pointless, the KANA staff are totally unable to read let alone follow polite requests. I was told my warranty on the hardware would be void if i used a 3rd party app (they didn't know app store existed) and that apple needed to add the code to the provisioning system and not them. They also became quite insistent that I couldn't have had MMS working before my contract was switched to the point of rudeness.

What you need to do is call up the dedicated iphone staff (who are equally unaware) and politely insist they add MMS to the back end provisioning system and they will do it for you. It take a while but it's possible.
