Mobile equivalent?

Hi all

A very basic question, wth probably no definitive answer...

I'm planning on replacing my desktop with a gaming laptop (my PC den is now my daughter's room and I don't want a desktop in the lounge).

I was wondering what the mobile equivalent of my current desktop card is - it's a 4870 1Gb. I'll probably get something quicker (looking at a 660 or 7970 depending on how much I decide to spend).

Also, is it possible to change the GFX in a Clevo chassis or is it fixed to the mobo? I might be more tempted to take the 660 now if I could upgrade to a better card later when the price falls.

my advice would be to go for the 675MX (or even 670MX)... this is roughly equivalent to a 660ti in a desktop card... I went with the 7970m which is roughly equivalent to a 7850 and it gives me nothing but trouble... google "enduro problems" and you'll see that a great many games suffer from poor GPU utilisation and it is taking AMD literally months and months to release drivers that gradually add a game to the list of ones that work with enduro

you can't turn off enduro on a Clevo either which is half the problem

but yes, you can swap the graphics card on a clevo, if you want to upgrade at some point

don't get the M cards from nvidia, make sure you get an MX (proper 6 series cards in stead of being rebadged 4/5 series)

Don't get confused with the 675M (not MX) which while a good card isn't based on kepler and is roughly equivalent to a desktop 560ti tho still gives a pretty good gaming experience.

Generally you can swap the graphics on gaming laptops and other high end laptops - however things like the amount of heat they can transfer and the amount of power they can supply to the card imposes some limitations and its not that unsual that while the card will use a standard MXM socket the card in the socket might not be physically the same shape/size as another one and so might not make an upgrade easy (typically clevo are better than other makes in this regard tho).

There are also lots and lots of people who do have issues with it tho (not including people using them in unsuitable chassis, etc.) so I'd definitely approach with caution.

On the other hand lots and lots (and lots) of people have no issues with the 7970m and it really is a cracking card. You'd be mad not to consider it given the price/performance. DSR the machine if it doesn't work out if anything

Clevo's are often sold on the basis of being custom built, DSR rules don't apply and some places will try to hit you with big fees to re-fit a machine with a different card

price divided by a performance of 10FPS in games that aren't support by it works out to pretty poor value to me :D

Cheers for the help guys. I'd thought the Enduro fiasco was sorted now (I did a google search and the internet seemed to go quiet on this issue around Nov 2012) but if it's still ongoing I might give it a miss.

OCUK only do the 675M in a 15" chassis, so I'll have to go elsewhere. My 2nd choice supplier has a 4Gb 675MX for the same price as the 7970 2Gb so I guess it'll be a straight swap (the 680 is silly money).
