I was driving along the A591 in Cumbria on Tuesday from Keswick to the A66, and there's a section not far from the M6 junction which turns into a crawler lane (goes into 2 lanes), i overtake a few cars at 70mph then i see a van as i go round a bend which turns out to be a speed camera van with what looks like a gatso camera sticking out of its rear end, i was doing 70ish, it didn't flash but i can't help thinking that i shouldn't have been doing 70 in the crawler lane, what are the chances of me finding a letter through the post in the next few days?

wouldnt worry if you were doing 70ish and the speed limit was not reduced for any reason such as roadworks etc.

it were'nt officially a 'dual carriageway' though, only went to 2 lanes for a mile or so.

It was parked up on my left with 2 lanes going my way and one going the other way. Hang on, i'll do a diagram...

It wont be a gatso, but it could be a speed camera van, they usually have big yellow boxes painted on them, with the camera sign in the middle.Front facing ones never flash, in case they blind a driver.

If there wasn't a centre barrier/ gap, between the opposite directions then it's only 60mph limit.

On my fine they convict at +10% + 2mph.

And that was the van

not looking good :(, was the back facing you and what's the speed limit?

It doesn't matter about the corner and inappropriate speed. They only care if you break the speed limit

It is a 60mph limit on that stretch as its still classed as single carriage way... Not looking too good:(

lol, how long do they have to send a NIP through the post, i estimate i was doing about 70 indicated, which is about 67 actual (tomtom) - though i never had my tomtom on at the time.

It's not a camera van, it's a "Cumbria Road Safety Vehicle". Despite the fact it's caught both of my grandmothers speeding very slightly.

well it's been 2 weeks today and nothing has come through the post, i'm guessing that they still have a couple of days though, as long as it was posted within 2 weeks?

This has probably been said time and time again, but if they don't send it recorded and you just burn the letter and say you didn't receive it, can you get away with it?

I guess they'd have records at their end to prove they posted it...
