simple question, which of these two is superior (and by how much %) NVIDIA 9600M GT or ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650, the NVIDIA paired with C2D running at 2Ghz and the ATI with AMD Turion X2 running at 2Ghz, thanks a lot :)

Get the 9600GT/Core 2 Duo laptop, hands down. The Radeon 3650 isn't bad, but it's not as fast as the 9600 and paired with a Turion X2 makes it even slower.

thanks for replies, another question! :) what sort of difference is there between 9600M GS and 9600M GT, its only clock speed right?

Yup just clock speed. The shader clock is on a different ratio as well so the 9600 GS has slower shader power clock for clock unless you unlink.

thats what i thought, so one could turn a 9600GS into a 9600GT with a bit of fiddling? how decent are laptop cooling solutions, enough to handle the increased clock speed of the GS? and also can one opt to chance the GPU cooler in a laptop?

Not easily, if you can afford it I'd say go for the 9600GT model. Heat tends to be a recurring issue for laptop overclocking, especially on the smaller laptops as they often use a combined CPU/GPU heatsink array which aren't necessarily the most effective when laptop CPUs are often running the best part of 80 degrees! IIRC I think the 9600GS and 3650 DDR3 mobile chips are similar, both being a decent percent under performance of the 9600 (where the c2d will help again)

what sort of games can one play on a 9600M GT, obviously not stuff like crysis, etc. what about vanilla supreme commander, medium settings without AA?

i played supreme commander on everything high no trouble at all. i think

ill install it again and tell u how it performs as it been a while as i played it. stay tuned

dx 10 all medium No AA 20~28 fps rez 1680x1050

did not experience any lag on any settings how ever did not participate in any big battles.

graphics card not overclocked all stock

hope it helps
