There is software to allow you to do it, but I forget the name of it right now.
Whether it works or not is down the the device though, some are not fitted with the correct type of IR to be able to send the correct IR signals.

iirc the device needs to be specced with consumer IR. This means that it will be powerful enough to control TV's etc from across the room. In general if it is just standard ir it will not have the power to work consistently over more that a couple of feet.
