So i have had enough of my ye olde phone which i havnt changed for the last.....wait for it

7 years:D

But i really need the interweby now and also other features which phones today have.

I decided i dont want contract so looking for sim-free as i plan to use a "gif-gaf" sim with it so i can get decent text+internet useage for low costs.

Question is, with £200 to spend what are my options?

Get a Monte Carlo Unlock it & spend the other hundred quid on credit.

The monti Carlo was going to be my initial phone but having read some reviews it seems it isnt the best phone out there in the £200-250 bracket now.

Also worried a bit by the size and the reviews saying it laggy.

the google phone sounds very good but just the price a bit too much atm.

Blackberrys look quite good with their keyboards ect but any suggestions to which one to look into?

If your after specs then the HTC Evo 3D at ASDA for £207 probably can't be beaten.

Currently out of stock though :p

I was looking at the Evo too, as an upgrade for my Monte Carlo. Hopefully next time its back in stock it drops below £200...only thing stopping me definately going for it is size, I prefer lighter/slimmer phones.

My wife's Xperia Ray is a pretty nice phone, I was pleasantly surprised when she got it. Plus it's getting an official ICS update.

I'm sure they can be had for about £200.

I am looking to avoid Sony Ericsson phones as i have had tons of problems with them in the past and just dont like them to be honest;)

The HTC Evo 3D looks interesting but i dont care at all for 3d tbh and from reading about its poor battery life it really isnt my sort of phone.

Keep these suggestions coming as the more phones i look at the better.

So far my pick is the Nexus s if it becomes cheaper, then the Monti carlo though quite large and bad reviews about laggy speed is off-putting.

No black berry suggestions ?

***just seen a Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II 16 GB Sim Free for £280............****

Apparently you can still get the Nexus S CPWH deal if you ask in store :)

I just got the latest version of Android on my Nexus S today, and it's convinced me out of getting a new phone for a while... 15 months and still going strong!

I am a really big fan of Windows Phone though, so the Lumia 710 on Vodafone for £150 is a great buy IMO :)

I've seen so many comments like this, it is tempting. But Apps (lack of) are the issue are they not ? Even now some apps are only available for iphone, and then others just for iphone and Android. I can't help feeling that once Windows phone reaches critical mass it will take off and be hugely successful, and apps will not be an issue. But it has to get there. It is making progress, I think I saw a number of 100,000 apps already. Of course the most important thing is that the apps that you want are available.

Got the Nexus S myself on the CPW deal at Xmas.

If you can get it for £200 from CPW then don't hesitate because its an awesome phone. ICS runs really well on it.

Maybe ask in store like someone suggested.

It depends dude, on how much you use apps.

So I use my Nexus S as my personal, and my WP7 device for work. In general my philosophy is to not use apps for anything I can just access via a browser (e.g. IMDB, Skyscanner, BBC News). However, even ignoring these there are some big omissions from the WP7 app library; Google Maps/Nav is probably the biggest one. And then there are things like Angry Birds Space, Draw Something etc., which all your iOS/Android mates will have.

But on the flipside everyday/functionality apps (for me); Spotify, Shazam, Evernote, RunKeeper are all available. And in addition, you have Xbox Live and the plethora of great games there. And the whole experience is just SO MUCH better than both Android and iOS imo. And a damn sight more stable - must be at least a several weeks since I last rebooted my WP7!

It's the best of both worlds - standardised unfragmented OS across all models, but a large choice of models and sizes. Add in rock solid stability, XBL integration, and a huge potential for future growth, and it has to take off at some point!

My folks are well overdue smartphones, and I will be getting them WP7s!

Su :)

Save a bit more and get a second hand Samsung Galaxy S II. I got mine brand new for £300, so I'm sure you can get a 2nd hand one for around £250, or less.

Nokia Maps/Bing Maps are ok replacements. Nokia Drive is far better than Google Navigation.
