Well my W880i kicked into life again so im selling it while its working, and I am staying well clear of Sony Erricson phones, I have 2 that are just a pain in the arse. Seriously, the W880i looks amazing, but the amount of people who say they they just get put through to my answerphone when im sat in a 5 bar area.

So Iv been looking at new phones and just couldnt decide, long story short I called O2 to see what they could offer, after saying I would prob leave they offered me N95 + 8gig memory card for £25 a month with 1000 text and 400 mins. thought that was pretty good.

Problem is, I kind of wanted an Iphone, so I went to town today to try and help me make my mind up, had a play with the iphone and N95 and im still none the wiser. iphone has lovely interface but the thing just feels HUGE! , the N95 aint much better because its just so chunky.

All im after is a qualty easy to use phone, not arsed about camera, just want good reception, easy to text, and the ability to hook up to my works email would be good.

I am selling the W880i which should get me around £100, if I sold the N95 that should bag me at least £200, which gives me enought cash to walk into a O2 shop and buy an Iphone, take it home, and visit that website for £30 that unlocks it to work with any O2 sim.

Arghhh! what do I do.

i'm not sure entirely what you mean, but my guess is you want to get the N95 on contract and sell that along with your 880, then buy the iphone with the money?

If that's the case you should take into account the fact that you have to take out a contract with O2 when you buy a iphone, you cant get it on pay as you go, so you would end up with two contracts, one for your N95 and the one you are forced to get with an iphone.

Personally i would say go for neither if all you want to do is make calls and text people. The N95 and iphone are smartphones, capable of much more than just making phonecalls but as a result you have to pay extra for them. You would get a better contract deal if you asked for a more simple phone with your contract.

sorry, I didnt make myself clear, if I was to sell the N95 and buy an iphone, I would get the iphone unlocked so it would work on the N95 contract (O2).

well decision has just been made easier, N95 arrived today, dont like it at all. menu is a nightmate, buttons feel like they will self distruct in a week or two. and it just isnt nice to use.

iphone it is I guess

One of the things Streeteh was trying to say was you cant get the iphone 'sim free' or on 'pay as you go' so you would end up with two contracts.

sorry for seeming stupid here, but how will I end up with 2 contracts, if I sell the N95 and keep that contract and 02 sim, then go in and buy a iPhone off the shelf.

As far as I am aware, the latest firmaware is bypassable, but only if you use a O2 sim, which is what I will be doing.

This is just one of many sites offering a solution.

Well its impossible to buy an iphone 'off the shelf' as far as i know, however it is possible to obtain them from a popular auction site at a rather high price. The problem with that is that many believe that unlocked Iphones will completely lock themselves as soon as the firmware updates itself, which the latest versions of ITunes do automatically without asking. One example of someone selling an Iphone would be:

The phone ships with the firmware version 1.1.1 which is the latest available. You should not update this phone as it may lead to the phone becoming locked. I will not be responsible if a restore from iTunes is done to restore firmware, which may lock the phone again. Also, if you plan to use iTunes, please use only version 7.4 and below. Higher versions may automatically lock the phone back up.

It just seems like too little is known and too risky for the large amount of money it costs. As someone mentioned before, maybe the LG Viewty would be to your liking as it uses similar touchscreen technology to the Iphone and it is a hell of a lot cheaper.

you can go into any O2 phone shop and purchase an iPhone off the shelf, standard RRP. Its only when you go home and hook it up to iTunes that you are supposed to register it and thats when you sign up for the contract.

edit:

I know the above is true becuase my workmate bought one last weekend, he is with Tmobile so he is having to wait for a all sim bypass to be released. he just has an expensive iPod touch at the moment !

they alread have, and the germans, trouble is have you seen the price for the unlocked phone over there, its between £700 - £1000

well went into CPW today and bought an iPhone, they dont tie you up to contract there and then, they dont even do a credit check, all they asked was for me to pay with my card so they register the handset sale to the name and address.

I will order the sim unlock tomorrow and hopefully get it working on my existing O2 contract :D

just an update, bought the unlocking guide from the link I posted to above, was a bit of a pain to follow, but it works:)

I now have my existing O2 pay monthly contract sim working, includign visual voice mail and even got the info to set it up on the Edge network for data.

Hooked upo my works exchange email account and all synced up, chuffed to bits with it.

So for all those people wanting a iPhone but without the costs

  • Get standard O2 contract with the best phone thrown in for free
  • Sell the phone
  • walk into CPW and buy iPhone
  • Unlock and use on you O2 sim :D

Mate, I'm thinking of doing the same. You said that you managed to do it but that it wasn't that straightforward. There are other companies out there that are offering iphone unlocking. Would you recommend the one you used? Did you unlock the 1.1.2 iphone? Do you have full functionality?

Thanks

What about the fact that Apple are killing unlocked iPhones through iTunes updates in the US? Surely they will do the same here?

I'm tempted to do this too, sell my 8600 Luna, and get an iPhone, with a PAYG sim.

The data tariff is appealing, but pointless over EDGE imo.

The french unlocked one is 750 Euros I believe.

Oh right i see, but what if i didn't want it on o2 what-so-ever as there contracts aren't as competitive as i can get with t-mobile? I'm still stuck, either way you're still stuck with o2, but you have an unlocked iphone... Chances of bricking are higher than locked and for what, the ability to use an o2 sim?

The idea of getting a phone then selling it to get the iphone is pretty good, but I wouldn't risk it myself :s

I would say get a viewty, similar to iphone in a lot of ways and better in a lot of ways too.

Viewty isn't much better or worse than the iPhone, it's key factor is its camera, everything else is same old... Don't know why everyone keeps going on about it...
