Mobile phone Dilema!

just an update, bought the unlocking guide from the link I posted to above, was a bit of a pain to follow, but it works:)

I now have my existing O2 pay monthly contract sim working, includign visual voice mail and even got the info to set it up on the Edge network for data.

Hooked upo my works exchange email account and all synced up, chuffed to bits with it.

So for all those people wanting a iPhone but without the costs

  • Get standard O2 contract with the best phone thrown in for free
  • Sell the phone
  • walk into CPW and buy iPhone
  • Unlock and use on you O2 sim :D

sorry if this is a silly question, but how exactly are you 'unlocking' it, when you are only using your 02 sim in it, and its originally on 02 anyway, so im assuming is locked to 02?

Viewty isn't much better or worse than the iPhone, it's key factor is its camera, everything else is same old... Don't know why everyone keeps going on about it...
Its funny, the fuss that Apple are making about how good its internet browser is, how many things you can do online with the iphone and it doesn't even have 3G, the viewty has HSDPA (3.6mbps), at the end of the day the main difference between the two is the price...

I for one refuse to pay a premium for the sole reason that Steve Jobs said I should, it is not worth the money they are asking for it considering almost every other phone on the market is free on contract and that in most respects the iphone is 2-3 years behind the competition. I will never understand how people get sucked into the hype... Maybe when iphone2 comes out, when it has HSDPA or at least 3G, they don't lock/brick the phone, include the ability to take video with that 2mp camera and it's not quite so expensive I might consider getting one.

Look you made me rant lol

The iPhone is locked to 'iPhone O2 sims' its a specail tarrif that has to be registered online with iTunes, try putting in a bog standard O2 sim out of the box and see what happens.

At present its not possible to unlock the latest firmware of the iPhone to all Sims, you can however unlock so it will accept O2 pay monthly & O2 pay as you go. only the Pay monthly sim with let you use visual voicemail though.

So impressed with the phone though, its just amazing to use, puts every other phone iv used firmly in the shade, its just to grea to use, and every funtion is instant. granted the lack of 3G is flaw, but other then that I cant find fault.(dont use picture messages and havent had to forward a text yet :p)

Using the method posted Tomorrow I will have my iphone but also either a k850I or Viewty dont know what to go for. :p

What about the fact that Apple are killing unlocked iPhones through iTunes updates in the US? Surely they will do the same here?

Not to sure on this one, although after hearing about it I did uninstall iTunes v7.5 and installed v7.4 (7.5 does automatically download any new iPhone firmware, but the file is over 150meg, so its pretty easy to spot it downloading and cancel it. plus the unlock im using works with the latest firmware release, so I can only see it being an issue on apples next firmware release.)

to be safe, just google iTunes 7.4.2.4 .

Cant you just turn off automatic update??

And if it aint connected to the net it isn't going to be able to update it anyway, the only way they can relock it is mabye by a SIM update? If thats even possible??

But with a vodafone SIM in it id be suprised it that happened :D

Well you're ok because you arsed around, but what about if you got a new number how would you text all your friends that :p? :D

Yeh I know, mind you, you would think they could fix something as simple as this in a future firmware release, heres hoping anyway, the same for picture messaging, I know there a few 3rd party apps in development which will allow this but it really should do it out of the box.

Good news on the Text forawrding front, a nice little 3rd party app has just been released that lets you select any text you have recieved or sent and forward it on to as many people as you wish :)

Would be nice if apple released this as standard functionalty for there next firmware release, but until then it works great.

Theres serveral people working on a MMS app as well, its just a matter of time I reckon.
