Despite constantly optimising my phone, and emptying screenshots, I STILL find the hard disk filling up.

I've got plenty (128GB) and only using 40gb, but its now 44 and I have not installed any apps other than a c ouple which only use hardly anything.

Why does this happen ? How can you get rid of apps you don't want, if the reason is Samsung bloatware.... because what else could it be ?

Apps cache data when used you'll probably find it's that. You can clear the cache data in the app system settings but it'll just come back again eventually.

Yeah im always managing space. You have apps that are basically browsers taking up half a gig.

I've chopped a lot of apps from my phone. I really hate doing a full purge but it's getting ridiculous always fighting low space warning.

Which phone is it? Is it slowly creeping up to full or is 44gb more than what you would like it to use? As above it's most likely app cache, once it those apps have the cache it needs it shouldn't grow any more (unless something is wrong with that particular app). I wouldn't worry too much unless you actually are running out of storage space.

Another thing to consider some phones have two copies of the OS, which allows the phone to update the backup OS so it doesn't interrupt you using the phone, then a restart swaps it over to that, or also allowing the phone to fall back to the older version in case the update went wrong. This can use a fair bit more space.

It is definitely bloat. I have the Samsung SmartThings app for a robovac, and it's consuming 850MB. I have no idea how that can be the case, but it is.

I feel like a major reason for buying a 256GB phone now is just to spend less time faffing with storage management. But the cycle will just repeat.
