Hey guys, so today i went out for a wee ride and was just heading home via the motorway and as i came round the bend there was a mobile speed van eye balling me, a glanced at the speedo and it was at 78mph before a started to slow down, anyone know what the tollerance of these cameras are or will i likely expect a brown envelope through ma door in 14 days :( cheers

i know that bikes have no front plates but do these vans take pics of the back of the bike when you drive past? if not a should be all good, doesnt stop the worryin tho lol

A few vans have cameras on the side and front as well as at the rear but positioning the van so both the front and rear cameras have a clear view of the traffic and number plates is tricky so I imagine you'll be OK.

I was in a similar position a few months back and nothing came of it.

Could check your district safety camera partnership website(if they have one), see if they do the 10% +2 mph guidelines. But personally I wouldn't worry doing 78 indicated. Being on the motorway, were they on a bridge looking down at oncoming traffic? Doubt they'd have rear facing picture capabilities if that was the case.

I would guess you were ok, for one unless youve had a speedohealer you were going more like 74, plus can these mobile speed vans work properly on bikes front on yet? I know for years they had problems with even the handheld ones head on something to do with hard to point the laser somewhere accurate?
Plus as you said above they were on a bridge so unless the guy got out and ran to the otherside... :p

Haha I'd love to see that! "go go go!"

The van was on the hard shoulder as you come round a sweepin bend so they were facing me m8, just hope that the van doesnt have a rear camera caus after the bend its a long straight stretch of road, guess al just have to wait and see, good to know they have trouble with bikes line of sight tho that the other poster pointed out, hopefully its ok, just a waiting game a suspect, a see loads of these vans around and its annoyin as of late there hiding behind bushes and on blind bends, talk about bein able to print your own money eh

You should be ok. As far as I know there are no camera vans in use in any Scottish force areas that have additional cameras fitted to them facing the rear or side. The officer (civilian or police) operating the camera equipment is an appointed officer of the court and as such can make a statement to go along with the photographic evidence as to vehicle index number. However, I reckon :-

A) He would have to be seriously quick on his feet to drag his backside up out of the chair he was sat in when he first spotted you and head to a position whereby he could read your rear plate as you passed him.

B) At about 78mph your not going to warrant the above response from the camera operator. If it had been 150mph then it may have been a different story.

I wouldn't sweat it m8. I've had the same thing happen to me at a higher speed and I didn't get the dreaded brown envelope dropping through my letterbox afterwards.

Fife conspiracy do.

They call it a bulls eye. Its on the side just by the drivers door. However i ask the question of how accurate they are. I could travel towards said van and be doing 40 in a 30 but as I pass im doing 30 so the "Bulls Eye" reads 30. so whats there argument there.

I passed one on the verge of the A92 just outside Kirkcaldy 3 weeks ago doing 85+ in my Fiesta. Still heard nothing so can only pray.

Also if you do bike safe with fife conspiracy they like to show you the vans and have told everyone about the bulls eye

Yup. another one they like to do there is on the Kirkcaldy bound side of the Caridgeway is sit in the layby near the top. You come round the corner and BINGO.

Im also from Glenrothes if you ever fancy a run
