how long does it have to be on you to get a reading, weather was really bad lots of rain.

I assume they're only able to check the speed of one car at a time but I wonder what the delay is between checking multiple cars?

A while ago I was going a bit quick on the A3 - about 79-80mph satnav speed so I'd expect to have been done if it was 80 (due to being 1mph over 10% +2). There's also the strong possibility I was within tolerance so there could never have been a problem. There was a car in front of me going slightly faster and I of course just eased off the accelerator and let my speed drop down. I never heard anything but it did get me wondering that if you're speeding and a car is in front of you whether you'd have that tiny extra moment to slam the anchors on and get away with it. Provided you weren't absolutely hammering it of course.

Don't even know why I was doing that anyway, I don't usually bother going over the limit these days because it makes no noticeable difference to my journey times anyway. Certainly not a habit :)

My understanding is that bad weather will affect their range somewhat so heavy rain may reduce range. Basically though as others have said. If you can see them then they can see you!

What is the range on the laser? That looks like a long way to me...

If it is on a tripod (and they usually are) 800m is pretty common. Generally, the van will see you long before you see it. They point the gun at a car and get a realtime reading. If it's high enough, they press the trigger and move onto the next. I've seen film of operators getting about a shot every two to three seconds.

For the ticket to be enforceable and legal/just aren't they supposed to form a prior opinion that you in particular are likely exceeding the speed limit, before they even use the camera? Seems pretty tough to do that from 800 yards away for one car every 2 seconds.

No. I have no idea where you've managed to hear that from but it's a load of BS.

It doesn't even make sense. If you got caught speeding then they'd say they had a prior opinion and the ticket would prove them right. If you weren't speeding you'd never know if they checked your speed or not anyway :p

What are all these traffic officer type 4x4s that I keep seeing girls parked at the side of the motorway? They don't look like speed camera vans and I have gotten away with going past them pretty quickly in the past.

VOSA response vehicles, for sorting out accidents and dealing with anything else which might impede the traffic.

IIRC it's correct?

I thought that it was a necessity that you had corroboration for excess speed. One being your own opinion, the other being the laser which confirms your belief.

Yes the lasers can get you from thousands of metres away, often they will only get you from around 200metres away on a dual carriageway.
