Mobile Speed Cameras... at night?

So following the other speed cameras thread last night, I was just thinking...

Driving at night on the motorway I've never seen mobile speed cameras on the bridges with the laser/radar guns getting you a mile off. I've seen police parked up watching for someone coming by at warp 10 and then follow & pull them, and seen them out and about on motorway patrol... but never seen them up on the bridges at night to get your speed by laser/radar and a front photo of your plate and then send you a NIP in the post.

Do they not do it at night?

Actually I've just thought...

Although the laser/radar should work at night, I guess your headlights would make any photo of your front plate pretty much unreadable?

I think they can use the handheld radar guns that gauge your speed (so they can then pursue you) but they can't use the van mounted ones, which photograph you, at night or in the rain.

I think

I once approached a scamera van with it's camera out facing me in the middle of the night with my lights on at a few leptons and never heard anything, although I got mixed reports on whether they worked or not as apparently they use an infra red camera to read the plates or something?

What would happen if you flew by one at 120mph out of interest? Would they still post you the information... or immediately dispatch a car?

Depends. You usually have two set ups

1) police car with officers sat in. They have hand held guns. They take your speed reading using the guns. Once they have this they then chase after you and issue you an NIP at the road side.

2) scamera van at the road side. Nobody will follow you and you just get a letter in the post. If its a huge speed and above the limit for 3 points once you nominate yourself as the driver you get a court summons instead of a 3 point offer. So if it was one of these vans, no they wouldn't summon a car
