Mobile speed gun use at night?

Hi All,

I wonder if someone on here could clarify -

Basically, the other night at about 12:45am I 'think' I was speeding in a 40mph stretch of dual carriageway. Before anyone preaches at me, yes I know speeding is bad mmmkay, but there was no pedestrian risk and a little further up the road it was national limit anyway...

I was following a Golf traveling at a similar speed although I was quite a bit behind him (likely he was driving same speed, if not then faster than me) and there was also a Van in the left hand lane near the Golf, traveling at about 50-60mph. As I got closer to them I realised there was a police car parked on the side of the road and an officer standing next to a bus stop aiming a speed/ traffic gun at oncoming cars. I immediately slammed on my brakes but I think I did it too late. The strange thing was is that there is a normal stationary speed camera a few hundred meters up from where the policeman was??

There was no other police cars further up the road pulling anyone over or anything. It was only the one unit on the side of the road. Please could someone tell me the most likely scenario as I've been driving for less than 2 years and I fear being done at the speed I was doing will immediately remove my 6 points. :(

- Nothing is likely to happen if nobody pulled you over
- They cant prove who was driving the car or cant prosecute due to it being night time??
- If they were doing people for speeding they would have most likely got the Golf and or Van who were infront of me instead of myself
- I'm going to receive a letter informing me I've got half a dozen points and a fine

Thanks for any help in advance.

I suspect if they were going to do you for speeding they would have stopped you at the point of speeding based on the scenario you have outlined. I also would urge against stating on a public forum the fact and details that you were speeding...

Or secret answer number 5:

- They would likely have pulled you over at the time, but now there's nothing you can do other than wait out the next two weeks hoping for the best.

It really doesn't matter how many people vote for any of the possible scenarios. Ultimately it could go either way and you won't know until the 2 week deadline has passed.

It's worth saying that the 2 weeks is for them to contact the registered owner, so if that's not you, then you may still have to worry for some time after that.

The lights would dazzle the camera anyway so I'm not quite sure how you expect them to know who to send the fine to.

I wasn't going to come in all preachy, after all "everyone" speeds occasionally, and what harm is an extra 10-15mph on a dual carriageway in the middle of the night.

Then I got to this part:

Honestly, if you were doing the sort of speeds to get hit with 6 points straight off, you might want to reconsider your driving - you've said you've had your licence less than 2 years, so without meaning to sound insulting, you're not the most experienced. Just ease off a little, getting to your destination 30 seconds earlier isn't worth putting your and other driver's lives at risk.

I appreciate what you're saying, but it's almost a little contradictory. You say 15mph over limit is ok, but for arguments sake lets say I was doing 18 over (ie 58mph) this has potential for 6 points. I'm not a loonatic on the road by any means and like I said, a little further up the road there is an identical section of road that's a 70mph limit. It's not like I was doing 50mph outside a school. :p

To the poster saying wait and see, I kinda realise that lol. The reason for me posting was to see if any of the knowledgable people on here could stop me from worrying :(

My bet is they know people ignore the posted sign for 40, as it turns to NSL further on, and they get a lot of people that boot it early.

Bit like when you come off a dual carriageway into a 30, and they'll have someone parked up zapping people that don't slow down.

My advice: don't speed and then you don't ever have to worry ;)

Assuming that we are talking an actual liveried police car, not a standard civvie-operated camera van, then the copper concerned is there to be seen. That's it. Unless someone goes past at warp speed they are just there because someone has complained about speeding along that road, and someone has spoken to someone who spoke to the Chief Super. They'll be there for an hour or so, to show that they take speeding seriously, then they will be off. It's politics.

i follow speed limits, i hate being in a 40mph and people trying to budge you to go faster right up your back bumper. just cause they have a 2.0ltr turbo injection bla bla. had it happen the other day some guy right behind me, then pull out dangerously just to go faster on a 30mph. well worth it. *eyeroll*

good luck anyway

As usual: spot on :(
