So, posted week or so back regarding installing new internet and line at a new build. Seems nothing is going to be ready in time for my move in date and think I am going to get a 1 month mobile wifi.

Has anyone had any good experience with these and can recommend? I was thinking of going for a large bundle (40gb)? As I would like to really use it for streaming Netflix / Now TV and maybe some online gaming (yes I know the latency might be a bit shoddy).

Also, does anyone know how much data all that would use on a couple hours a day? Can't seem to find anything online which could answer.

Is it cheaper to buy a Mifi then the data sim seperate?

Really depends on how much Netflix/Now TV you will be watching, especially if on HD you will easily use up 40gb. And if the odd game requires an update, that will take a hit as well.

You will need to check what coverage is like in your area, as it will vary on location.

Vodafone does a 50gb 30 day SIM for £30: https://www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/bundles-and-sims/sim-only-data-bundles/

EE does larger bundles but sadly they seem locked to 18 month contracts.

Simple web browsing, a few Skype calls and stuff working from home 2 days a week eats up about 30Gb per month on my mobile connection. Good luck with streaming.

Hook up an average household to an internet connection and it chews through data like you wouldn't believe. Organisations like Facebook now continuously deliver code that means that every few days there's a multi-hundred Mb update to their iPad app. Leave things set to auto update on Windows, Apple and Android devices and you will consume more data than you'd think possible. That's before all the things you actually want to use your internet connection for.

If you're going mobile lock things down as to what can use it would be my advice.

Going to be a right bummer without internet :(

I won't be updating any games, so hopefully gaming wouldn't use that much...

Anyone know if option on Netflix and Nowtv to stream in SD rather than HD. Can't seem to find anything on my smart TV.

Thank Vodafone 50gb seems a good price, am I correct it would then fit in any mifi device such as the Huawei?

Streaming over 4G will burn through your data very quickly. Some networks don't count streaming from certain providers in the data cap (three?), so it may be better to look at options like that if you want to stream. Also look into data bolt on's for what you have on your current plan - by the time you buy a mifi and a sim pack it may be cheaper to pay your existing mobile provider if it's literally going to be a month.

I used 136.69GB combined up and down last month mostly streaming video - I do use the highest quality settings though - dropping back to just high quality would roughly halve the amount used by streaming.

Windows 10 is an annoying one - though I could mitigate it slightly with local sharing of updates but there are complexities to why that isn't setup - combined with all the devices on my network ~11GB was used last month by stuff relating to Windows update and even if you set connections to metered:

"In that case, we'll automatically download only those updates required to keep Windows running smoothly."

Which now largely seems to be about 70% of the available updates so you pretty much have to disable all the update relevant services and force policy changes with GPE, etc. to have any chance of managing bandwidth on a restricted package if you use Windows 10 - MS are basically a bunch of muppets.

Three do the Binge thing for certain services. But for Netflix, it's for SD and you have to use the app on the phone.

Three also do 100 GB for £25 a month at the moment.

I really think your best bet here is to just adjust your usage during the ~month you're without fixed line Internet. Trying to find a plan where you can blast through Netflix is going to get expensive.

Yeah it's looking that way having done some research :/

The 100GB Three one sounds good but just a 12 month contract :/

Thanks looks a good offer, they also have a unlimited data one too! I read that the carrier can find out if you've used a mobile PAYG sim as a mobile wifi though and can cancel the line, anyone know if any truth in that?

Read the small print, unlimited often has a soft limit after which it's rate limited. The normal method is to monitor what sites you're hitting, as for example your phone has no reason to hit windows update or NTP servers each day. I can't tell you how to avoid this, but it's quite easy.

On an unrelated note, now seems like a really good time to consider your personal privacy, since the snoopers charter was enacted by our wonderful government a lot of people have chosen to make use of VPN's as they can encrypt all traffic preventing 3rd parties from viewing what you are doing and the sites you visit. They're quite reasonably priced and can be paid for per month, year(s) or lifetime subscriptions.

Same rules as mobiles - if it's network locked then any sim from that network should work, if it's unlocked (or can be) then you can do what you like.

Cheers, picked up a Three Sim today. Will go pick up the router tomorrow and see if works!

If you were looking for a all in one option WIFI Router with fall back built in the TP-Link 300 Mbps 4G LTE SIM Slot Unlocked Wi-Fi Router TL-MR6400 is not a bad choice but a bit pricey for short term use.
