MobileMe -> iCloud confusion

'evening.

Having seen http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/12/icloud-and-migration-from-mobileme-services-now-live/ I've just migrated my [email protected] account to iCloud. This was relatively painless.

However it keeps referring to this as an ID, which confuses me. I've always had a firstname.lastname AppleID which is different to my [email protected] MobileMe account - I had it before my MobileMe account. [email protected] is used for MobileMe (iDisk, email address, etc) and firstname.lastname AppleID is used for iTunes purchases (Music, iPhone Apps, etc), Apple Retail Store reservations, Apple.com support, etc.

Should this have been combined with my MobileMe account in the iCloud migration? Or am I now going to have one account for iCloud, and one account that has all my iTunes purchases?

I R CONFUSED

I think almost everyone is going to be in this position. We all had to come up with a MobileMe account address when registering for MobileMe. If you had bought anything from iTunes before that or had an AppleID for another reason (Online Store, Support, etc,), you automatically now had 2 accounts.

I have the same issue and its baffling.

I actually have

iTunes Apple ID: firstnamelastname
MobileMe Apple ID: [email protected]

Now ideally I would like [email protected], but I couldnt sign up for this, when i jumped on the end of the mobileme trial, presumeably because its taken by my iTunes Apple ID? If its taken by someone else, then the system is effectively allowing two people to have what amounts to the same ID?

Thinks I've just confirmed its taken by someone else.

So I have firstnamelastname and some else has [email protected]. Daft system.

I have two i think:

Itunes purchases: [email protected]
mobileme: firstname_lastname (though could be [email protected] - can't remember)

i'm assuming that as per http://www.apple.com/mobileme/transition.html

that i'll be able to migrate mobileme to icloud and keep my email/calenders/contacts etc, but will have to retain my old itunes id for all my purchases of music/video/apps.

It is fairly confusing and I can't see why I can't just merge the two, but c'est la vie.

So, my long standing apple id I use for all purchases etc is a hotmail email address, I also have a @me.com address from Mobile Me.

Having just upgraded to iOS 5 I have input my apple id in the app store as my hotmail account, but for iCloud I think I need to use my @me.com address. I would prefer it if my store account becomes my @me.com user IS - is this possible?

I know you can change the primary email address for your apple account, but does this also change your user id or just your contact email?

Seems they need to allow users to either register for a new or use existing @me.com address for iCloud and allow customers to change the user id from one email address to another (namely your @me.com address), problem solved.

I have 3 Apple IDs now..

I have my Gmail account that i originally signed up with. Then I bought Mobile me with gave me a .me account, but when i installed iOS5 it asked me for Apple ID which I put in my Gmail account, in which under the iCloud tab, if you want to tick the Mail box, you have to put in another @me.com address, which stupidly, it won't let me put in the one I have already....

Why Apple? Why?
