MobileMe Launch
7/9/2008, 6pm-12am PT

As part of the MobileMe launch, www.mac.com will be taken offline at 6pm PT on Wednesday, July 9th.

Members will be unable to access www.mac.com or any .Mac services during this time with the exception of .Mac Mail accessed via a desktop application, iPhone, or iPod touch.

MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance window.

So that's 02:00-08:00 BST :)

While I can't fully comment on the quality of the spam filter in MoblieMe, in .Mac it's mostly done through software/learning from what you tell it. Gmail is incredibly good in that if a spam message gets to your Inbox and you move it to spam, then the Gmail team review it and if it is add it to a Gmail-wide spam filter.

In short - Gmail's is better...way better ;)

And AdWright, this just popped up in a story in Google Reader today :)

Oh, and if you don't have the need to edit things in iCal (from what I can gather you just want your current calendar on there so you can sync your iPhone to it?) each calendar has a private URL that iCal can display and you can then sync to your iPhone :) Have a read here.

Hmmm, i'm trying to decide whether I switch to MobileMe Mail or stick with Gmail. Using it kinda locks me in with MobileMe, not using it makes me think i'm not getting my moneys worth.

Decisions, decisions :p

You would be able to sign up if the name was an alias (as I think they aren't converted to @me.com) or if the account had been inactive for quite a long time.

I've just realised something - the whole point of MobileMe is that you're able to access your Mail, Calendar, Contacts and iDisk no matter where you are or which computer you're using. The flakey support of IE is a major issue. Lack of IE6 support means I won't be able to use it at Uni AT ALL, and lack of full IE7 compatibility means using it on other people's computers will be hit and miss depending on what browser they use and what version they're running.

Once again compatibility issues screw us Mac users over...but from Apple?!

Strange, I've never had a problem getting onto the MobileMe Mail since last weekend after the initial failing of everything

Although it is by far not my primary email address yet. I'm still having misgivings about converting to it just simply based on this whole launch mess.

1% of MobileMe members cannot access MobileMe Mail. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I don't understand how it won't work for 1% and for the other 99% it's fine. You'd think it would either be not working, a bit hit-or-miss but for everyone and not a certain group of people, or working. It just doesn't make sense!?

I have never, ever, had Gmail not work for me. EVER. And that's a free service!

This is why i've cancelled my account (and managed to get a prorate refund). I can understand the initial problems they had but it's well over a week since and they're STILL having trouble with it. I didn't really even commit myself to .Mac beforehand either so I can't imagine what people who depend on their @mac.com/@me.com address are feeling.

It also made me think about the service. What benefit do I get from it and would get even if I had an iPhone (I have an N95 8GB).
Well, I can check email through Gmail on my computer if i'm at home, and on my phone if i'm away (I have a data plan) both through IMAP. This takes away any use for the mail aspect of MobileMe.
If i'm at home I can use Address Book and iCal, and if i'm away I can use the Calendar and Contacts on my phone. I have NO use for this data to be pushed elseware since i'll either be using one or the other. If I do something on my phone I won't need it on my computer until i'm AT my computer. So long as my phone is somewhere in the house it takes 2 clicks to sync my phone over Bluetooth using iSync. This takes away all the Push related benefits (so long as I remember to sync), and also any of the web interface benefits.

I'm left with Web Gallery (nobody my age (20) would use that - it's all about Facebook at the moment), iDisk (which I don't actually use, and if I needed online storage I get 5GB free with Windows Live Skydrive) and a rather useless in the UK iChat ID.

Using 1 Mac and 1 non-iPhone, ultimately makes this service a total rip-off. Even if it was actually working :o

So i'm going to stick with Gmail and my unintegrated but free (and working!) group of other services.

/rant over :p
