Mobo and RAM please

First one is a nice board, but a bit extreme for running onboard graphics? That one can do crossfire at 8x/8x and it's a semi-enthusiast board.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-278-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782 should be fine for what you want and for the RAM:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-191-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517 is nice stuff.

(I'm assuming you've got the more recent C3 965 chip, that board doesn't support the old C2 140W version).

Thanks but that board doesn't have sata600. Is there much difference between HD 4290 and HD 4250? A 140MHz higher clock seems like a fair improvement. I would prefer the newest so I don't have to upgrade as soon.

The RAM has better latency and is cheaper, nice.

Yep the chip is the 125W version if that's what OcUK stock, not actually got it yet just know that's the one I want. :)

To be fair it looks like that is the only one without SATA600, probably why it's on TWO.

Your new suggestion looks like it'll do, decision now is if I want to go for that and save a bit of money or go for my origional choince or simular which has the newer chipset and a few more ports/features.

About the RAM you suggested, is there any reason not to go for the low latency version? it's dropped down to the same price overnight.

Yeah I don't need lots of PCI-E slots, trouble is just the more expensive boards have more SATA/USB3 ports and newer chipset/onboard graphics.

Just thinking about the future, I want this board to last a while. Think I will go for the cheaper one for now and see how much the whole build is going to come to, then go for a more expensive one if the overall budget allows.

What about the RAM?

Thanks. :)

I'm with stulid.

What do you want the IGP for? They aren't really for gaming to be honest. I have a 4200 and it's perfectly good for Bluray and HD playback, games have to run at low/medium settings (depending how graphic intensive they are). I have an asus mobo which allows an overclock of the IGP, not sure if the GB mobos do this though.

Good luck with the upgrade

crucial, gskill ripjaw or that reaper ram will be good, lower timings the better.
The reapers got the lowest timings so I'll just go for that then. Cheers.

What do you want the IGP for?
SD HD video and eventually W7 when I can tear myself away from XP.

I've got a 4200 atm aswell, upgraded from a socket a back in november http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=15288273&postcount=11

I'll actually be doing two upgrades. The family PC (which is also a socket a!) needs upgrading too so I'm upgrading again and the family PC can have my old parts, which are more than enough for what it needs.

This is how my basket looks atm, MOBO subject to change.

it will take me from
Athlon 620
M4A785D-M PRO
XMS2 2GB

to

M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3
Phenom 965
Reaper 4GB

and the family from
MSI KM4M-V
Athlon XP 3000+
2GB DDR PC2700

to (basicly my old setup)

Athlon 620
M4A785D-M PRO
XMS2 2GB

two little things.

pick the cheaper 955CPU, its so easy to increase the clock multiplier by +1 to turn it into a 965, a blind/deaf dog could do it.

two ssd's? one for each pc? if so cool.

My reasoning for the 965 is it'll have a higher clock when cool n quiet is enabled and it'll overclock further/easyer. Is this not the case? You can consider me a blind, deaf dog when it comes to OC, but I can manage to enable the auto option or to just raise the reference clock. A higher default clock would help me.

Also would the 965 at stock run cooler than the 955 @3.40GHz?

One SSD for each yeah. The family will go from a WD 80GB IDE to the Intel so that'll be nice.

Stulid makes a very good point. Because the cpu is a black edition the multiplier is unlocked, go into the bios and up it by 1 and bob's your dads brother ;p

It would make sense to upgrade your OS now as you are upgrading the rest of the system and will need to do a fresh install of windows. If you opt for the 955 and get the H50 cooler you can put that money saved towards an OS disk. THe H70 has a bigger rad and extra 120mm fan but id be surprised if the case you buy doesnt have atleast one 120mm exhaust fan and the H50 rad will be more than adequate to cool the X4 cpu.

Just a thought....once again good luck with the build

You did...just ;p

The 965 is basically a 955 although it has a lower voltage range (just). To be honest i seriously doubt you would get a 4GHz OC from either chip. 3.8Ghz is the max stable OC most people will achieve with either a 955 or 965. So why pay more when you can get the same result from the cheaper 955.

On a side note. If you use the machines for video playback have you considered a tv-tuner card? Vista and Win7 home premium editions include an app called Media Centre. This app allows playback of media (photos, music,DVDs) and also allows you to record from the tv-tuner.

It's like a poor mans sky plus box basically. You can pause, rewind live tv, record whole series of tv shows. The recorded files can be played back in media centre or windows mediaplayer, so if the families pc (or xbox 360 if u own one) is on the network they can access and watch the shows too even if they dont have MCE on their pc.

OK you convinced me, if 3.8 is the max then there's no point getting the 965. I wouldn't be pushing it all the way anyway.

In fact reading around, if I can get the 955 to run at 3.4GHz undervolted I'd be happy and just leave it on that.

Already got a TV card mate, Compro E900F.
