Behind you... Naked!
I have just swapped the guts of a PC from an AMD to an Intel

Seems to start up just fine and gets to the LOG-IN bit, but neither the KEYBOARD or MOUSE will work.

Seems to be the USB as a whole.

You can often get around this by either waiting, or trying out other USB ports but this is simply not happening.

Is there something - hell even some trick that I can do, to get it to the desktop?

F8 options all dont do a thing by the way... I have tried some obvious things.

So am I right in thinking that you changed the motherboard and CPU and didn't do a re install? Which version of windows?

You're going to have quite a few problems with chipset drivers, I would just do a re-install if I were in your position.

Other than that, have you tried all of your USB ports? The ones you are using may be dead...

Unless its an exact chipset change then you really have to re-install, Bearing in mind you have changed cpu brands then it is impossible that chipsets will be the same. Disco_Boy has it right you need to back your data up if you can and format else you'll have issues.

Yeah sorry guys, but thats an obvious given yes, but the reason for the chance was simply that the old was duffed and the only spare bits I have that will fit into the case is an I3 setup... Its obvious that I will need to reinstall, I know that, but there is a load of stuff on there that I want to try to backup properly first, and simply having access to the files will get at the basic data etc, but there is also emails and such that really would be better off if I can actually get windows up and running and simply run the relevant app first, before I simply wipe and reinstall.

Anyway, I have gotten past all of that now thanks.

I got the original KEY/MSE and theyu didnt work and so that was onbviously the entire USB situation was iffy and I tried disabling the O/B USB and I went through a handfull of my USB cards and second one did the trick fine.... Took a few moments of course but the mouse started to work ,and once that happened, I went straight to the DEVMGR and removed all teh drivers etc and installed the Chipset drivers for the Intel.

Works a treat now.

Wil still reinstall but no need for now.

I know you've sorted it now but just out of interest, did you enable USB keyboard and mouse support in the bios? Were you even able to get in to the bios if the USB wasn't functioning?

If you'd have been clear in the OP then we could have advised you better. FWIW if you're in that situation again, you may find it easier to use an Ubuntu/Linux live CD/ USB stick and boot into that in order to copy your files off.

Why? Where was I not clear?

I was not asking about recovering the data... having used Linux for many years, I know that I can use a Live disk to grab the data... That was NOT in question.

I asked about getting the MOUSE and KEYBOARD back up and running and thats all I wanted.

Some data on some programs cannot simply be copied over to save, I needed to get back into Windows.
