Hi there! I mostly lurk here but this forum is great, so much information...anyway, I'll get to the point:

I was using a Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe with A64 3500+ and a Gigabyte 7900GTX.

I was planning upgrade the processor to a 4400+ or something like that, but just as I was thinking about doing that, I turn my PC on one day, hear a "pop" and see a wisp of smoke. RMAed the mobo and got a refund. Now this was somewhat fortuitous as I was wanting to go Conroe but wasn't keen on upgrading a mobo that I'd only owned for a few months, but now I've got the full value back, I'm keen to do so.

So I need advice on what processor, mobo and RAM to get. I was planning to go SLi at some point, and I'm still not ruling it out, but given my current TFT only supports 12x10 max and even if I get a new one it'll be 14x9 (ws) max, so I'm not sure it'll be worth it, and there's always the 'DX10 cards around the corner' argument, on top of the lack of choice/quality/value among mobos that support SLi and Conroe.

My budget is around £250-300 for CPU, Mobo and RAM (ideally 2GB). I might be able to stretch that a little, depending on how much I can sell my 3500+ for. I'm not normally an overclocker, but it seems like the way to go with Conroe to get the full potential out of it, so I guess I'll get an OEM processor and whack a 3rd party air cooler on it.

Suggestions please!

No, but I took it to a PC shop and they said it was either the processor or the mobo (although they did seem fairly useless).

I was fairly certain it was the mobo, as it was a very quiet pop and the wisp of smoke seemed to come from the front of the case rather than the back near the PSU (I was looking directly into the PC when I turned it on).

I guess it is possible there was a problem with the PSU, but I think it was more likely the mobo for those reasons, as well as the fact I've seen a PSU blow (loud pop/band, spark, instant powerdown), my PC still powered up, all fans span up etc, and I got a refund when I RMAed the mobo. I'll bear in mind the possibility that it was the PSU, but that isn't the point of this thread...
