Hi all can you help
I have around £250 - £270 max for a Mobo/ cpu //ram .
new gfx card later date,

Intel amd ?

No overclocking .... Pc will be used for gaming and web.

My pc now is
Gigabyte 965p mobo
intel 6400 2.13ghz
2GB gskill Ram
Nvidia 7800gtx

Intel Core i3 2.93GHz much faster?

Question .. these new pcs when you overclock them do you still have the energy efficient function where it lowers the cpu volts and mhz saves power when not doing nothing? Do you disable this when overclocking?
a little overclock ok?

Looking for a pc that doesnt draw loads of power when idle surfing web

And graphics cards.... whos best in performance at openGL games like quake 3. rtcw. et ...Nvidia ATI ?......or maybe ill start playing newer games with my new pc :)

CPU (£110): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-244-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328

Mobo (£87): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-408-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

RAM (£70): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-041-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

CPU listed above will revert to low MHz if not being used I believe.

As for the graphics cards, it would be best if you could give us a budget and then the best match can be made.

Yes the cpu will revert to low mhz when not being used. Its called AMD cool&quiet. It will only use as much as you need it to use to save power.

looks good ...
I nearly buy intel again. Glad i posted ... thank you
That AMD cpu is in the "Pro gamer" bundle build for + £300 :)

Do these AMD cpu run cool ? I hate loud fans .be using a silent fan cause the pcs in a bedroom.
do the fans change rpm on the cpu like intel? should i buy a cooler?

The Ram Patriot a very good make??? i see the timings are lower than the most others, Do they have special chips ?? like the winbond bh5 days ? should i buy pariot nothing else? thanks

Is my Tagan PSU ok ...same connections? think its 420 watts ,,, its one of the 1st gen tagans psu

Thanks guys

I'd say save some money and get it all right away. Here's my suggestion.

TBH for gaming at present a tri-core is as good as a quad. So I'd say an AMD Athlon II X3 Tri Core 445 3.10GHz (Socket AM3) Cost: £70.49

Mobo, no overclocking, so a budget board would be OK. The ASRock N68C-S UCC GeForce 7025 Cost: £32.99 This board's bios can unlock a fourth core, cpu willing, and has full oc potential if the peep changes his mind. It will take a 445 as far as it will ever go, usually 3.6Ghz to 3.85Gh, if desired

Ram well, the Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit and has tighter timings than the similarly priced OCZ this week. Cost: £70.49

That's a total of just £173.97. Almost enough left over to get the gpu right away inside the same budget. How about a Palit GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 at £117.49

New Grand Total inc the 460 = £291.46 :)

Unless you game in excess of 1900x1200 then the above will get the job done very nicely.

EDIT - Just a thought you could wait for the RAM if you wish. The Asrock mobo above has two DDR2 slots and two DDR3 slots so you could use your current DDR2 ram in it for now. TBH you wouldn't see a huge difference (except in benchmarks) anyway.

Cheers,

Some games do use 4 cores, not many sure, but some. And I'd rather go with a quadcore to cover any future games that may use 4 cores. The Phenom quad is just an all round better performer than the athlon tri aswell.

The motherboard is an old chipset. A more modern board like I spec'd gives USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s, both up to date features that are likely to grow in importance in the near future. (SSD's like the crucial using the SATA 6GB/s for example).

Havn't checked which OCZ RAM is being referred to but if its the gold, its not a favourite generally with quite a few dead sticks and what not.

If getting a GTX 460, I would always get the 1GB version. Not only is the 768MB version spec'd lower in the memory department, its spec'd lower in other areas too. Not to mention that the palit brand seems to have suffered complaints about noise etc.

Well thats subjective I guess.

If the OP has the funds to afford the 1GB version then there is no reason they shouldn't go for it. We don't know what he will be able to afford though of course since he only asked for CPU/RAM/MOBO so he will know what he can afford when the time comes.

If going for a 768MB version then I'd at least try and get something other than the palit as there are better versions.

BTW the noise problems were with the early bios. When the bios is flashed or you buy one now with the new bios on the problems seem to have vanished.

Well I have no idea about the validity of that, but I'm in no position to argue.

I would not compromise the CPU/MOBO though just to fit a GPU in now.

Take your point matey. But as my moniker suggests I'm a bit of an addict for getting the best bang per buck (i.e. Value For Money) ;)

I'm just suggesting that there may be options that could save a hundred pounds or so with no noticeable drop in performance. But that £100 could then be spent on things which would make a big difference like a SSD

@ stulid

Remember - No Overclocking. 3 cores at 3.1Ghz will beat 4 cores at 2.8Ghz almost every single time. Hence the 3.1Ghz 445 rather than the 2.8Ghz 630. I don't think that insane really. ;):)

id still opt for the quad for the same price even if stock speed is slower but if ocuk stock the x3 440 again then i would opt for that becoz it was priced at £60 @3GHz

The Anandtech link is a bit of a mixed bag. If anything most of the comparisons favor increased numbers of cores or benchmarks not everyday usage. Sorry if I gave the impression that I meant most times in benchmarks. I meant most times is practical usage.

However, returning to swampy's needs, if you read his opening post you will notice he's very interested in low power consumption. Now take a very close look at the last two comparisons on the link you gave. There is one heck of a huge difference.

I'd still say 445 rather than 630 for all those reasons. Perhaps we'll have to agree to disagree.....:D

Cheers,
vfm
