MOBO, CPU & RAM for NAS/Server Build?

I have a Synology DS207+ that I use as NAS and as a web development server. However, the latest version of Wordpress, which I use extensively, runs so slowly as to be unusable on the DS207+.

I'm planning to build my own replacement and would like any thoughts on the best hardware platform for the job. The job will be basic NAS stuff like back-up and remote file access; web server to run Wordpress as well as other web applications (nothing enterprise level though!). I intend to use Ubuntu Server for the OS. I will not need the capability to play back HD video.

I can pick up a VIA ARTiGO A2000 very cheaply but would it be up to the web server tasks?

I've also been considering low power integrated boards such as Intel's D425KT & D525MW as they are very reasonably priced.

What would be the advantage of spending double on Jetway's JNC96-525 or JNF99-525 boards.

Could I get away with an Atom N270 such as on the Jetway JNF94-270 and would 2GB of RAM be adequate.

There seems to be a ridiculous amount of choice so I'm hoping someone on the board has tried the same thing and can share their experience.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

The VIA ARTiGO A2000 seems like it would be fine; a 1.5Ghz C7 is around Atom N270 performance.... e.g MASSIVELY more powerful than the 500mhz arm processor you'll find in your Synology.

Thanks Bigsy

What kind of limitations might I run into, running Ubuntu Server from a CF card, in respect of the processing power I'll need for database driven web development? I'm not particularly au fait with the demands this puts on a system.

The ARTiGO does seem like the most cost effective solution even including the cost of RAM and a CF card. I have HDDs already.

I've ran a home server on a 1.3Ghz celeron and ubuntu on a class 10 sdcard for the past couple of years and find it fine as a webserver + htpc + nas.

I guess it just comes down to the kind of loads your putting on a database as CF access can be slow but I'm sure there are many caching soltions that can load the whole thing into ram if needs be.

Edit: actually thing takes normal hdd's so I guess you could probably just load the database on one.

Could also look at the HP ProLiant Turion II N40L MicroServer which has AMD Turion II Neo N40L / 1.5GHz & 2GB Ram believe it still has the £100 cashback offer running so can pick up for £125-50 if you shop about.

more info on the server here

Thanks sypher365

I came across the HP machine late last night. With the rebate it looks like an amazing deal and I'm currently working my way through the thread you linked to.

A bit of quick research gives me the impression that the performance Turion II Neo N40L should be more than adequate for my needs. The system also seems quiet, with a big low RPM fan, and its power consumption seems good even with a full complement of HDDs and RAM.

Cheers Bigsy

The Artigo is looking like the front-runner at the moment. Unless I can find the HP Micro-server with the rebate.
