Mobo & CPU upgrade... anything worthwhile coming along?

Hi guys,

I'm running an i7 2700k, running stable at 4.5 GHz, 16Gb RAM, gaming on a 2560x1600 using an AMD 7950, roughly 4 years old. My wife's PC is my older system, an 8 year old Q6600 with an ancient 4890 (I think) running at 1920x1200, which has started to fail. I need to get a new graphics card for my main system and was leaning towards getting a new mobo and CPU as well and "upgrade" my wife's PC with my current mobo and CPU, rather than just replacing hers with a new bundle, or second hand from the MM. The main benefit is that I'll be able to use this to play with my son on BF4 etc when he kicks me off my PC(!) I'm not in a rush though, so I was wondering when the next "big thing", both CPU and GPU is coming along... although there's always another next big thing :D

Cheers,

Jed

Not sure... what would I need to spend to gain a decent improvement?

My thoughts are that I'd rather invest in a new setup for mine and move my current one into my wife's PC, rather than spend a couple of hundred on a relatively chep setup for my wife's PC only to upgrade mine in a couple of years anyway.

EDIT: I've got a 650W PSU, Corsair 800D case, so really only looking at mobo and cpu, maybe new ram if required. I'll probably be going for a 390X 8Gb somewhere down the line as well, need to run 2560x1600.

Thinking about it, I'll need new ram anyway, as my mobo, cpu & ram will need to go into my wife's PC. If I've got to go for mobo, cpu and ram then does that change the view of going for a ddr3 system over a ddr4?

If you need i7 and if you want DDR4 (as you need new ram) then the X99+i7 5820K bundle is a better deal than i7 Skylake+Z170.

I'm in two minds about upgrading my CPU and mobo for my gaming rig now, not sure if it's worth it. If I went the other route and bought a new mobo and cpu for my wife's PC, what would you recommend for gaming with a 7950 at 1920*1200, for games like BF4, Battlefront etc. Aiming for as low £ as I can...
