Hi,

Motherboard has packed in (been playing up for a few weeks the system is about 3 years old).

So its either get a new mobo for £80-100 or just use it as an excuse to go intel with a new cpu/mobo/ram and sell the cpu/ram from my amd system.

I have no idea what im looking at theres so much choice! So im hoping you lot can help me out.

PC is an all rounder with rest of the specs in sig.

Dont really have a budget but say £550-£600? Id like a 6-core ideally (although I dont really need it do I?)and may aswell go 16gb ram. If I can get a decent air cooler too that would be good. This will be the first time ive gone intel! Hoping it will be a nice improvement!

Thanks,
Sean

Intel don't have 6-core CPUs (yet), but that's because their quad core CPUs (or 8 with HT) perform much better than AMD's 6 cores.

I would go for something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail £209.99
1 x MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £127.99
1 x Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-21300C15 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (HX426C15FBK2/16) £99.95
1 x NZXT KRAKEN X31 AIO Water Cooling Unit - 120mm - Variable Speed Control £54.95
Total : £492.88 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

They do, 5820k and 5930k are 6 core :)

seanyc5 overclockers have a few bundles on the 5280k (six core)

Here's one https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-015-GI

£413 for motherboard and cpu, add some quad channel ddr4 ram and you'll have change left over from your 600 quid budget.

The X99 platform is really good, well it would be, its Intels top end "enthusiast" line. And many people who would ordinarily have gone with a mainstream i7 are looking at the enthusiast line as its about the same price.

Sorry totally forgot about the 2011 socket. :o

That aside he doesn't need it, like he mentioned... :p

EDIT: Added my edit to 2nd post below.

Don't get me wrong, I'd agree with you that for someone who is mainly gaming, then it's 6600k all the way to be fair.

I doubt you'd see real world differences for gaming between a 6600k and 5820k.

But I do think now though that anyone considering an i7 in Skylake have a tougher choice, even though the 5820k isn't necessary, the price point is a good excuse to step into the top end Intel has to offer.

For someone just looking for a new motherboard, cpu and ram there's not much difference in price between Skylake and Haswell-E

While I partially agree, that 5820K bundle is more expensive (with 16GB RAM) than my suggestion. I also wouldn't recommend X99 for a gaming build, the tech is also slightly older.

The board is also mATX (not keen if not purposely built for mATX). X99 also lacks the support for higher DDR4 speeds compared to the X170, no USB 3.1 ports etc...

EDIT: It's a tough choice, X99 would be nice (little overkill) but I think I'd go with Skylake just for the future proof tech and features... Either build would be a nice improvement.

Hi,

Decided to go with this thinking the m2 drive along with my crucial m4 will provide a better all round experience for my needs. (probs wont make use of the 6 cores)

Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail £174.99

MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £106.66

Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-21300C15 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (HX426C15FBK2/16) £83.29

Samsung 850 EVO Series M.2 250GB SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive (MZ-N5E250BW) £80.82

NZXT KRAKEN X31 AIO Water Cooling Unit - 120mm - Variable Speed Control £45.79

Came in at £590, what sort off overclock you guys think ill get?

Thanks to all that helped!

I managed 4.6 ghz as in my signature, 4.7 is prime stable but it thermal throttles prime95, I'm a bit old school and I know prime is no good but the extra 100mhz is not worth the extra heat/noise and volts.

That is just my chip though, 8pack tested a few and all pull 4.5Ghz Minimum.

Btw, i recommend not buying the m.2 Samsung Evo 850. It has no additional speed benefits and is considerably more expensive than the standard SATA 2.5 inch version. Go for the sm951 if your budget allows.

I'm waiting out m.2 gen3 4x to become mainstream for more options. If you have something to use for now, used that maybe.

Good choice. ;)

I can't say I would've gone with the M.2 SSD though.
