I have an Epox 9PNA+Ultra which has been running fine for the last 18 months or so. I have just bought a 150gb raptor and am wanting to have my OS on that disk. However, since adding the drive when I boot from CD (XP) it freezes on "Setup is inspecting your configuration" or something like that. Its the black screen with white text prior to the blue setup screen.

Things i've tried so far:
- another XP cd,
- removing the raptor and leaving the drives as standard prior to installing the raptor,
- changing the jumpers back and forth between cable select, slave and master on the cd drives,
- removing all drives but the cd drive and my old hard drive,
- resetting the bios to default settings,
- both xp cd's in my current windows environment i.e. to see if my pc can actually read them,
- the cd drives (tested with music in both drives) and also tried XP disk in both drives

And now to be honest i'm all out of ideas. I don't get it. How can my system boot from CD one day and not the next

Any help would be appreciated :)

When you tried the other CD drive did you disconnect the other one. The reason I mention this, is because I've seen this happen before just because a faulty CD Drive was connected. (even when it was not the one being used)

To be honest I can't remember. Been too busy to test it recently lol. I'm back on it tonight so will try it in both drives.

Cheers for the reply

Ok this sucks. Tried all of the above now :( Have also tried knoppix which boots up and runs just fine. I've unplugged everything from the sound card to all unnecessary USB devices. I've since tried a 3rd windows disk from my laptop to see if it will boot and try to install from it but it still hangs. However, all my tested windows disks work fine in my other PC

I've been wondering if it was a knackered IDE channel on the mobo since everything has been unplugged/moved around etc. But if this is the case then how does knoppix run

Any help would be appreciated right about now :)

check the pins on your connector to and from your cd drive look for bent pins.
also have you set your cd drive to boot first!
you did say that you have tried another drive while having the old drive disconnected.
would be a good idea to try another cable.

Pins - check
boot priority - check
different cables - check

done these...........the thing that is bugging me is that it reads the window xp cd fine once into windows, and it alsoreads knoppix and runs that fine too. It just hangs when scanning for hardware :( But it installed fine about a year or so ago so its not making sense :o
