ok I built a new rig a while back....

Asus P6t mobo
XFX 5870 XXX

I was getting random crashes / striped lines with the 5870... so Ive RMA`ed the card.. been gone since 15/1/10 grrrrr

so Ive picked up a Zotac 9800 GT eco from the MM untill it comes back...

Im getting random artifacts on the windows & desktop... can run benchmarks .... but its flashing in the corner at me as I speak ;)

Ive tried in the other BLUE slot and still the same... has a Asus Xonar in there as well.... have taken that out and still the same.

Rig was OCed to 4ghz .... no problem...... but everything back to AUTO and still the same...

hmmmmm have I RMA`ed the card for no reason (did work with XFX and they recommend RMA time....)

Problem with the Mobo instead?

PSU is Galaxy enermax 750w
(drives - 2 x 500gb satas - 2 x Raptor 150gb raid 0 - Intel SSD 80gb)

any ideas what to try ?

Check all your voltages set in the BIOS.
You have a decent PSU so (you would like to think) is unlikely to be that.

The 9800 GT is not as power hungry as the 5870 from what I have read, so its very likely to be a Motherboard snag as stated, but I wouldn't totally disregard a possible PSU snag..

Starting with the obivous -
The voltages should be set correct and the PCI should be auto default to 100Mhz when auto is set on the BIOS. (IOH/ICH PCIE VOLTAGES etc).
Obvious questions ! -
Do you have a spare PSU to test ?
Does the card seem hot when its crashing ? Whats your case airflow like ?

You have a very similar spec to me, let me know what you bios settings are and I will see if I can see any potential problems.

well the 9800 gt off the MM wasnt tested so Im thinking it gotta be that ... because my 8800GTX seemed ok...

then I got the 5870 and didnt work properly.... just found out the issue with the 9800 after posting here......

just got me thinking there was a mobo fault...... but will change some settings in the BIOS to make sure...

have done a reformat and card is still artifacting in desktop.... 3D benches ..... but randomly crashes and then the Nvidia driver recovers.....

the voltages are set to auto apart from CPU 1.3

what should the other voltages be at?

my 8800 GTX OC was set to auto ... and didnt artifact.

anybody notice some settings that should be changed ?

Nothing there that would point to a PCIE graphics snag ?? That I can see at least.

Is it the same when you bring your BCLK/UCLK and QPI speed down to standard setting ?

I take it you have since sold on your 8800GTX so cant test that again ?

PSU question is going to rear its head again, do you have access to a spare one ?

no access to another PSU

Am getting refund for 5870 now ... so was just going to order whatever 5870 is in stock.... maybe the ASUS......

yeah if i run everything auto .. stock speeds... the gfx still does it.....

the card is running @ 70+ degrees doing nothing ... then rises to 100 when doing anything 3d.

Been in contact with MM seller and he said card wasnt tested.... so popping it back to him.

Seems I got a dodgy 5870.... then a faulty 9800gt as a spare ;)

Not sure which card to buy now !
