I need a new upgrade. The old q9550 C2Q is finally starting to show its age. It has been one hell of a trooper cpu for the money...6 years old and still going.

One thing is though I have a black and white themed build so I'd like to have a black mobo or black and white mobo if there is one.

Decent fast RAM that fits the colour scheme too.

Finally it's the cpu upgrade - I don't do any editing or the like and gaming is not as much as before and I want a decent cpu that'll last me. I'll be overclocking it so needs to be a cpu that will clock on air/h2O AIO.

Was thinking AMD but then again if I want to future proof myself again I might have to go down the route of INTEL.

Not really got a budget in mind tbh. At this stage I'm looking a few ideas so i can start to budget.

Rest of spec is

Corsair 600t Case
Corsair 650W psu
MSI 270x gpu
h100 cooler

So what's the options for a black /white type theme cpu, mobo and ram?

Is there any point in going older ivybridge cpu if it is cheaper? I'll not be likely to upgrade cpu mobo and ram again for 3-4 years minimum.

May as well go for the newest platform, though if you can hold out for another month or so. Intel are releasing new k versions of the 15/17 4 series. Theese are reputed to have a much better thermal paste used than the current 4670/4770k which are very hot running chips when overclocked. Coupled with the new Z97 chipset boards this should see you set for a while. As the Z97 boards were only released a few days ago, very few people will have them so id suggest reading a few reviews to see what theyre like.

Not really, the price is the same as Haswell so you might as well go latest tech :)

Back from honeymoon now. Is there much movement on the new stuff? I take it that it's the 4790k chips that were due out when I first posted this? Are the black and white options still feasible for an upgrade with the new stuff out?
