I’m likely gonna end up pulling an i7-12700t from a Dell Optiplex Micro I’ve picked up, but I’m struggling with finding a reasonably priced motherboard to go for… any suggestions please? Been out of the Intel sphere for a few years, so no clue what I’m looking for.

Even with the CPU being 35w part I believe, the tiny Dell is utterly incapable of running for more than a few minutes before the fan ramps way up and ends up being audible on calls! I did repaste the CPU with some Noctua gunk, and it’s calmed it a bit, but after lifting the cooler again it’s obvious there’s no even contact at all!

Any feedback and suggestions welcome please (apart from trying to tame the Dell box).

Only DDR4-SODIMM from the Dell, unfortunately... need to dig the parts bin and see if I've got normal DIMMs in there!
yeah, get the ddr4 version if you already have the ddr4 ram sticks (or if you want to save on costs)
or get the ddr5 version if you don't want to hamstring the cpu and don't mind spending a bit extra for the ddr5 version of the board and ddr5 ram
