MOBO starting up issues with CPU power socket

Hi guys,

So I just cleaned out my water cooled system and put it back together. When I press the ON button the computer switches off after 1 second and attempts to start back up again, and it keeps doing this.

So I disconnected everything and it boots up fine - after connecting everything one by one it seems the culprit is the 8 pin CPU connector to the MOBO. I don't know why or how this has happened but any input would be of absolute help. The points I think you guys should know are:

1. I added a new Intel SSD so the previous HDD (with Windows and all the drivers on it) is now being used a slave drive to the new SSD (which I haven't installed anything on yet).
2. When disconnecting the cooling system a little came out of the rad and spilled on the PSU and a few splashes on the MOBO. Luckily it weren't a lot and I managed to dry it all off but looking at where the water had gone it was only on the surface of the MOBO and PSU - so I HOPE there isn't any internal problems but I don't think there is.

With water leaking on to your mobo it could have caused a short.

Check to see if there is any burn marks on the motherboard 8 pin and also the psu. The other suggestion is that if you have a spare power supply you could try that , that would eliminate the psu.

There are definitely no burn marks on the MOBO or the 8 pin and I also tried a brand new PSU - so that eliminates that.

I have checked the pins on the CPU and the CPU socket and both seem fine...

any codes on the mb led clock? that means nothing really the 8pin plug,as the cpu isnt powering up without it so you need that connected,it could be memory related or something else

keep your old windows hdd disconnected as it will try to boot from any drive with windows on first, try with just the ssd

no codes just an 88 but that's default on the MoBo (Gigabyte MOBO).

Tried connecting the old windows HDD and with the SSD but neither worked.

Do you think it could be a dead CPU?

its not dead cpu,88 might be reseved code ill have to check but its an error code as it should cycle through to ff if all is fine and booted into windows

EDIT

It's error code 8B that shows as 88, the board is trying to initialise the ISA and PCI ROM's according to the manual

try unplugging the 24pin in and out a few times, also try loosening the cpu heatsink a little

oh and leaving out the mb battery for 30mins wont hurt either,it will reset the bios and any oc settings though

hmm maybe - but it literally reboots itself after 2 seconds so I don't think there's enough time for the MoBo to register any error codes in the time from switching on and switching off...
