Guys i swapped my mobo for a new one - i plugged everything in and works fine. Didnt need to install....

However seen some mixed comments in other threads where people have said you should re-install and not all cores will work etc etc.

My pc seems to be doing everything exactly like it was before....

dual core on socket 775 with sata hard drive..old mobo was ecs p965t
now i got a gigabyte ultra durable 2

Old motherboard drivers conflicting with new drivers is the simple answer. I got my i7 as part of a bundle with a H55 board. When moving the system onto my current P55 Windows wouldn't boot at all.

a gigabyte ultra durable 2

what chipset?

You can get away with it if new mobo is of similar spec to your old one. If it's a different platform the old os usually just bluescreens on me. Even if it does work it's always advisable to reinstall, for reasons already stated above.
