As the title states!
Looking for a motherboard (at a reasonable price) that will be able to push a 2160!

Thanks in advance

EVGA 650i Ultra is a good choice for dual-cores and it's Penryn compatible for later as well or the DFI Infinity P965-S Dark is a steal at the moment although I'm told it has a steep learning curve and DFI are getting a reputation for being a bit flaky at the moment.

Both are available for under £70 delivered and either will allow you to push that CPU hard. Boards based on the P35 chipset will also be able to better clock Quads, but they are more expensive and you don't have a Quad ;) .

Thanks, i quite like the look of both! I'll do some reading around see if I can find any reviews on them both!

Get something intel P35 based to be quite honest. Why buy old tech?

Abit IP35-PRO would be my choice.

They overclock better full stop, not just quad-core.

My advice too if you have the money, I only got P965 chipset because it was a steal of a price (auction site).

Abit IP35-E (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

£59.99
£70.49 inc VAT

965 is dead IMO at the 70 price range.

There are just simple better mobos out there like the one I mention above.

Some very nice clocks over on XS with this mobo.

A £120 motherboard for a £55 CPU

I agree with Walter. The 650i chipset is pretty damn good, whilst the DFI P965-S dark is dirt cheap for what is considered to be a top-notch board. Yes the P965 chipset is older than the shiny new P35 boards, but it's more than enough for an E2160.

The ABIT P35 E is 70 pounds why on earth go 650i? or 965 for that matter

No quad clocking for the future.

No penryn support on 965 hotter chipset and the same outlay.

No reason to get 650i/965 at all unless you could get amobo for under 40 quid or something.

EVGA nForce 650i Ultra (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (122-CK-NF66-T1)

£49.99
£58.74 inc VAT

or 12 quid more for the P35 Abit?

HMMMMMMM

I did, for a £48 CPU. The point is I can get a better chip (dunno what though yet, 3.3GHz e2140 is plenty fast) and still have an amazing board at a later date without having to buy yet another board.

Hmmmm £58 for a top-notch P965 DFI board or £70 for a 'budget' P35 board  ;)

You seem to forget that the vast majority of people buying an E2160 have no intention of upgrading to a quad-core in the near future (near as in the next 24 months), and Penryn is still a town somewhere and not something they're going to be dribbling over shortly.

Bang-for-buck is the P965 DFI. And that matters to most people when buying computer components.

Its pretty much between

and

I most likely wont be going quad or upgrading for some time, looking for the best performance for the cheapest price. Swinging for the dfi infinity at the moment, is the p35 worth the extra? There is the cheaper abit -e one which seems to lack a few features and the heatpipe layout which is inbetween, would that be worth getting? I noticed something to do with the hdmi sound feeding into the graphics card but i already had a x-fi for audio!

I personally wouldnt get another EVGA 650i ultra if I was planning on serious overclocking as the one I have has a 360 fsb maximum.

Well the IP35 is a better board than the IP35-E.

But if you're on a budget I would get the DFI and spend the £30 difference on something else. Maybe get a good cooler that lets you clock the nuts off the E2160, or maybe get a better graphics card if you're intending to upgrade it too.

I wouldn't call the DFI Infinity P965-S Dark a top notch mobo.

Its a budget DFI like all infinitys are.

I think mainstream would be a better term. Just like the P965 and P35 chipsets are.

The Infinity was something like £120 when it was released a couple of months ago.

For starters the Abit P35 is not 30 quid more. Its 12 quid more..

Over on XS the clocking is nearly on par with the pro.

The heatpipe or lack of is no biggy due to the fact that the chipset runs so much cooler than the 965 like on the DFI.

For 12 quid extra its a no brainer.

There is a reason why the DFI so cheap.

On OcUK the IP35 (which the OP is considering) is £88 and the Infinity is £58. That's £30 by my calculations.

And state the reason, dude. If there's something the OP needs to know about the Infinity then at least tell him.

It was £240 or so 2 weeks ago. Mine was £380 a few weeks ago.

And the point is now that both the Infinity and the Q6600 are the same as they were before their price drops.

Surely you of all people aren't trying to say that the Q6600 is now crap just because it's dropped in price.

I mentioned the Abit P35 E at £70

The DFI is old my todays standards and the price reflects this.
Newer mobos are out that run cooler and faster and overclock better and support more cpu's.

Just because the DFI was 120 on release does not make it the mobo to get.

You misread my post.

The quad at 170 is a steal and IMO the only chip to get in the C2D range at that price point.
