Would like to flash the BIOS of my 4850, to a modded one, one which will give me more performance (Max clocks at moment, Core 693Mhz, Mem 2100Mhz), I only want to flash the BIOS, I don't want to do any (hardware) voltage pencil mods.

So, basically looking for a (proven) modded BIOS that will work with this card.

Present HD4850 details:

Thanks.....

Flashed the BIOS and it completed correctly, but now Vista 64bit does not recognise the graphics crad, the drivers install, but do not pick up the card....

What steps do I need to take to remedy it?

Thanks.

8.9 drivers? they should work. point it to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-9_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_68906\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF\

if u wanna flash to your old bios just use your backup bios or go to http://www.mvktech.net/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,26/ or techpowerup and download asus bios.

Flashed back to orig BIOS, card not recognised, tried installing 8.9 drivers, vista 64bit still did not recognise it, then reflashed to modded BIOS and ran ATI Home 11, and put a Backup image on C:\, and this worked, but when tried up update drivers from 8.7 to 8.9 on this, halfway through install, the graphics card again becomes unrecognised by Vista 64bit, so not sure what the issue is....so just ran ATI Home 11 again and graphics card recognised, but with 8.7 drivers.

At the very beginning I did run the flash without uninstalling the drivers, so I would think I am paying the price for that.....

Oh, okay then. Then it must be because of the crash. Thats the risk you take with winflash. In the unlikely even your pc freezes or crashes in the flashing procedure then youll have to waste your time blind flashing. Then again winflash is a lot more convenient that atiflash.

Also 750 without a pencil/hard mod is impressive. I doubt many hd 4850s could reach that.

None of the flashes failed.

However, the very first flash I did, I did NOT uninstall the drivers (the flash was successful though), and I can only think it has something to do with that.

Solved the problem about the graphics card not being recognised by Vista 64 bit, after using winflash to update BIOS, simply used atiflash to reflash 4850 with stock bios (from mvktech) in DOS (ran it from floppy), was then able to update drivers from 8.7 to 8.9, graphics card being fully recognised by Vista 64 bit...

I think the moral of the story is, if using winflash to uninstall drivers before running it, or simply use atiflash to flash in DOS!

EDIT:

Dave, just saw you have the same issue I had, try using atiflash to flash in DOS...:)

Thanks again Gareth :) I now have a bootable 4Gb pen drive which I will keep for nothing else. I`ll just keep adding any applicable apps (ASUS Ezflash for mobo for example) and updated bios ;)

How did you make pen drive bootable?

I tried to make a flash drive bootable for the purpose of flashing in DOS, but it failed miserable, I used the guide from Here..."Making a bootable USB stick"...

There's a really useful HP tool you can use, whats your email address, I'll send it you.

It was the HP tool that I was using, "SP27213", however, using the link supplied by Gareth, it would seem there is a more recent version, "SP27608", so the problem may have been that I was using an old version of the HP utility, or simply that it is one that cannot be made bootable, but I have a few others (flash drives) I can try, if the need arises again....

Thanks for the link Gareth...:)

Have you got the DOS files too? You need them to get it to work.

Well, I thought I had, I ran the HP utility, then copied a number of files from a download called "USBImage" onto it, also with the bios....

However, if you look in my Trust you will find my OcUK email address, I think it would be worth having the DOS files you have, as I may just not have been using the most recent ones.

Thanks. :)
