Well as it happens I was one of the 600,000 whose details were on the MOD laptop and was notified in a letter. The letter advised me on what I should do to avoid identity theft which was a little condescending since they lost a laptop full of confidential data. They however comforted me with "I should emphasise that there is no evidence to suggest that your details are being used for criminal purposes".

Is there anything I should do to protect myself other than being wary of e-mails, calls or letters asking for more details or bank accounts being setup (a lot of sensitive data was recorded)?

Send a reply back stating that "Sorry, but this person can't be reached at this address as Islamic terrorists have kidnapped him"!

Make sure you keep hold of that letter. That could be the only thing, in easy reach, you have which proves to places like banks that you haven't opened a bank account, or got a loan or whatever.

Bitlocker and a decent password f t w.

There are so many technologies out there to prevent exactly this, why aren't they being used?

Got the same letter. Why someone needed the details of an application I made 15 years ago? Also I wonder how many people could still be contacted at an address from 15 years ago. I have been meaning to check my credit rating for a while so will probably do so now.

Don't know what everyone's getting worried about. The laptop was probably stolen by some junkie pretty much 0 chance that anything apart from the laptop being formatted and sold on will happen.
