Hey,

When I was a little younger, I used to do the whole warmer tabletop thing - However, I didn't enjoy the gaming nearly as much as I enjoyed painting. I figured this would be a good place to ask as oppose to GD.

I'm looking to get back into painting figures etc, but I don't think I want to go the Warhammer route again. What else is out there, in the same kind of realm, that I can collect and paint, without having to worry about the playing side too much??

Your best bet is probably to check out an online retailer like Wayland who stocks miniatures for a range of games.

The biggest alternatives are Warmachine (steam punk), Infinity (sci-fi) and Flames of War (WWII). If you don't care about playing then there's plenty of manufacturers to choose from.

Warmachine and Hordes if you fancy a similar alternative to GW stuff. If you just want some fun minis to paint, my fave is Hasslefree Miniatures:

http://www.hfminis.co.uk/

They've got stuff like the L4D cast, Mad Max, Evil Dead Ash etc. They have great zombies!

Might not be your cup of Tea but Malifaux by Wyrd minatures has some outstanding minis

Sure they can be a pain to build but are great to paint

You can pick them up in almost any game shop

is it just the warhammer tabletop you dont enjoy? im currently paining the minis from space hulk but its a board game not a normal warhammer game.

a lot of other board games come with minis, although lower quality minis in general stuff like Super Dungeon Explore are still top quality (theres a couple of other top quality ones but its too early to think too much)

may just be me but i have tried painting without an end goal for the minis and it never had the same motivation as painting them so i could play with them and as i dont play warhammer minis boardgames give me this reason.

The infinity range is the best 28mm sci-fi range I have ever seen, the detail is amazing and a real challenge to paint well.

Knight models are good, I love Red Box Games and Reaper pathfinder ranges for fantasy stuff.

As mainly a painter I wouldn't touch games workshop with a barge pole, sad really as citadel was a great brand /company before they changed direction many many moons ago.

As for paints, I have recently started using Scale 75 and its great stuff, and the Vallejo model range, I like my paint flat mat and add my own sheen when needed.
