My modem is situated down stairs and computer is up stairs - I'd say about 20m apart.

I was connected via a Virgin Wireless router, but that appears to have broken, is it possible to connect via a cable?
Can you get them 20m+? Will it affect my internet speed etc?

Cheers in advance.

Performance wise cables are preferable to wireless, and Cat5e is good for for lengths up to ~100m. You've linked a crossover cable though, which might be fine assuming auto-sensing ports on whatever you're connecting, but you'd probably be better off getting a straight version (out of stock apparently).

well it works :)

a lot better than my wireless connection too.

also just a little thanks to the guy behind the counter - one of the nicest and polite guys i've met.
