Hi, Wondered if anyone could help with installing a PCI 56k dial-up modem - I know its slow but need it as backup.

The pc runs xp pro and all was fine with the setup and modem, but Ive now fitted a new HD and reinstalled xp pro + sp2. All is working fine (inclu BB) except I cant get the PCI modem installed and working. The problem is I fit the card, boot the pc, the pc recognises the new h/w has been added - with the normal little window on desktop. The window then disappears and thats it. Nothing has been added to device manager and if you run detect new h/w nothing is detected!! Tried the modem in another pc and all is fine. Also just tried another make of modem and it does the same...

If anyone has any ideas it would be most appreciated, getting a tad frustrated now!!

Cheers:mad:

sorry did you say that it doesn't appear in device manager after showing the 'found new hardware' window, not even with the yellow question mark?

have you got any other spare PCI slots you can try?

Yes, thats correct, it doesnt appear in device manager at all..

Ive tried it in other PCI slots with the same result.

Ok thanks..

Yes, but only while the new H/W is being detected.. Once the new H/W message has gone, it also disappears from the sys tray..

Try booting xp into safe mode, check system hardware and remove all modems, also check audio devices for voice modem driver, etc and restart. Also remove any software that might be controlling he modem

On someof therese devices you should install the software (usally an oem control panel and or drivers ) before isntalling the modem.

Ok I'll give this a go.. How do you boot into safe mode and what will this do over a normal boot? There are no modems in the sys h/w, but I'll check audio devices. I did install the drivers for the sound blaster audio modem before the modem card was inserted, maybe this was the problem..?
