Modem/router - Known devices reconnect but can't get access to the net?

I have an ASUS DSL-AC88U AC3100 modem router, which I've been happy with. However, I've been experiencing an on/off issue (probably since I first got it) when known devices reconnect to the network. For some reason when they reconnect they can't go online? However resetting the modem fixes it and everything is fine, they connect to the net perfectly.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? It feels almost like some kind of setting. Like a timed device limit or something? But I can't find any info on it.

Any advice much appreciated.

Is the firmware on the latest version (looks like 2021 was last update just for a CVE). Failing that, have you tried a factory reset?

Finally back on this as I'd mislaid my password and couldn't login. Found it now though!

Thanks for all the replies so far.

This is a total guess. Could it be Firewall settings and the way ports are assigned? Can you look at how the firewall works for this router?

All the firewall settings I can see are 'turn firewall on/off' That's it! There's a URL Filter section and a Network Services Filter but none of them have anything entered. Everything I've read about enabling firewall say that you should leave it on. Is that correct?

I've just updated the firmware now.

Any other thoughts regarding this would be most welcome!

Try another brand or the ISP supplied router and see if that makes a difference. If it does, open a support case and see how you get on. If not well as expected then buy something from a company that actually cares about customers.

I have an ASUS
There's your problem. :D

But in all seriousness, you should not have a router that went EOL years ago. This is borderline ok for most brands but Asus is directly hampered by cve that they only recently patched for current models.

One thing to try that comes up a lot on other forums for Asus is the smart connect wifi being the main culprit. It appears to just randomly change the wifi channel at will so some devices will "stealth" connect but not actually be able to have any data passed to it since it still thinks the old channel is good. The fix? Turn off smart wifi and set a manual channel. Could explain why when you reset it does a global rebroadcast of the actual channel and clients know what to do. Obviously if you have the problem with wired devices then disregard.

If I was you, on FTTC wanting an AIO modem/router solution. I would be binning that Asus and typing in "Plusnet hub OpenWRT" into the bay and spending like £30. Do like half an hour reading into the extensive pdf on how to set OpenWRT up and have a proper network that you know will be secure for a long time. Wiki page: https://openwrt.org/toh/bt/homehub_v5a

Check Downlaods section for "OpenWrt/LEDE Installation Guide for BT Home Hub 5A". You only really need section 9.
