Folks,

I've got an AMD Phenom II X6 1090, 4GB DDR3 1333MHz, SSD, Antec 650w PSU and currently a 1GB XFX HD6450. Haven't really tried it for gaming but presume it would be a bit rubbish. Don't have a huge monitor, only 19" but is good for me.

I plan on playing Modern Warfare 3 at some point (when I buy it), but what card is good to play this with reasonable high(ish) settings?

I don't need the best but would like something that would allow me to play easily without drawing too much power :)

Its far from a power hungry game, depending what resolution your monitor is I would say you could get around 60fps with a few dimmed down settings. Failing that a 67**, 68** or 550Ti should handle it pretty well without breaking the bank.

Just to show how this game runs, I average around 280-320fps completely maxed at 1920x1080. Remember if your card could run COD4, the odds are it will run MW3 just as well.

If you HAVE to play this on PC then a 6850 will do fine.

I just dont get why anyone would buy a GFX card for this game. The money you spend you could buy a 360 and the game!

If your upgrading at least give Battlefield 3 a go! You will need somthing more than a 6850 though for Ultra settings :)

Because if you buy it on XBOX you would be stuck with the pad, epic fail for FPS gaming.

A 5850 would run MW3, if you want to play such a rubbish game that is.

AMD 6750, NV 550Ti upwards will play it at 1680*1050 with easy. They will play it at 1920*1200 but you might think about going for a 6870 at that resolution.

GTX260m in my laptop which in reality is a 1Gig 9800GT plays it fine with high settings at 1680x1050 with 4x AA - just the odd bit thats slows down to 30-40fps mostly 50+ so pretty much anything will do.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I do actually have a PS3 and was thinking about getting it on that but I just can't play FPS with a controller. Call me old skool but I much prefer keyboard and mouse.

:) I have no idea whether it is good or not, it looks good anyway :) Last COD I played was COD 2 - WW2 etc :)

lol at getting it on a console... really? just not sure why anyone who has ever done any PC FPS gaming would play an FPS game on a pad.

As far as MW3 goes you'd be forgiven for thinking it was an expansion for MW2, they've mesed with the netcode to accomodate high latency players more than in previous COD games :( which takes a lot of the skill away from it as you have a very unpredictable experience with single shot/burst fire weapons and have to resort to spammy or area of effect weapons. If you happen to get in a game hosted on a half decent connection with a bunch of old school fps players then the game is a blast - however much more likely you end up on a crappy host with about 40% of the players using wallhacks/ESP and about 1-2 in every 20 players using an aimbot.

I agree with you for most of it but the wallhack/ESP and aimbot claim isn't true. I've played nearly 3 days of it now and although I agree with your statement of the MW2 expansion and the embarrassing accomodation of high latency players, the latter part of your statement is complete and utter nonsense. I've played AM and PM, during the week as well as at the weekend and I've seen 2 aimbots and a possible wallhack or two. I used to be an admin on the very first CoD so I know what to look for in killcam, aimbot's are easy to spot. My point is, why talk a load of nonsense rather than a true reflection of when you played?. I like to discuss with you as well as read what you write so I'm a little shocked at the fact you don't usually talk out of anywhere other than your mouth. If you dislike the game why don't you just say that as what you've wrote isn't true or even close to being true.

with about 40% of the players using wallhacks/ESP and about 1-2 in every 20 players using an aimbot.

^^ ^^ Come on Rroff :p Oh and I'm no MW3 lover, I actually think the first Modern Warfare is where it is at tbh.

I say get it on console because 1. its not got anything on it to trouble BF3 on PC (and yes i play that with a keyboard and mouse). 2. You only really want this game for single player. IMO.

So yeh i say get it on console if you have one. Leave the PC to the gurd stuff!!!!!

+1

I know some people that are running MW3 on old GTX 260s and GTX275s, not sure on frame rates. IMO if you want to expercience a real multiplayer game, get in a squad on BF3

funnily enough if you look at how many brought mw3 and bf3 mw3 has retained a lot more of its players.

been a huge drop off of bf3 players but mw3 has been about the same

Depends a bit on the gametype you play - if you've only just started you'll be playing softcore as hardcore doesn't unlock til a later level - and less people hack in softcore due to the killcam replays making it easier to spot. I play mostly hardcore TDM and other hardcore modes - where cheating is far more rife... FACT.

I'm actually one of the people who does enjoy the game, however I've more than a decade of competitive/hardcore FPS experience and always 1-3 ranked in any lobby I join and enough COD experience to know when other players shouldn't know where I am using full stealth loadouts, avoiding common camping spots/routes, etc. and especially over the last week the number of players pre-firing on me as they come around the corner - when they should not know I'm there at all - has increased dramatically.

EDIT: I should say up until about a week ago there was maybe 1 in 10 players using a wallhack but the last 7-8 days its increased a LOT.

I honestly dont see how you can say that, (where are your sources) just recently the B2K map pack was released on PC (13th Dec). Map packs always have players flooding back, especially if they were hardcore BF players, as these are classic maps.

My 2nd point is, it takes ages to rank up on BF3, i have played 56 hrs 37 mins and im just about to break level 43. The guns/classes/ribbons/medals take ages to aquire. When i played BLOPs it took me about 25hrs tops to reach rank 55. (Not sure what the rank is now though)

IMO longivety is definatley with BF3 and not MW3. From what i have all ready heard, most of the MW3 players are bored and looking to come over to BF3 LOL

We'll need to meet in a FFA and see who is rambo as I'm a decaying decader too!!!. Rawr :D.

Joking aside, I'm 4-5 Prestige (purple thing) and have played all the game types but I've spent most of my time in soft/core "kill confirmed" using specialist packages for some reason. I have played a few hardcore games but not enough to be able to say "nay" to your reply.

I still think it's exaggerated but until I can make that up for myself I'll take your word for it :).

I need to go back to HC SnD @ WorldMafia in MW1. Admins and no clays/last stand or martyrdom woooo. Less cheating, less lag and dedicated.

I don't understand why so many are cheating online?. Where is the drive for the time put in to make yourself a better player and learning from your mistakes?. When you start to learn and improve, you feel the reward so what do the idiots gain by doing so?.

I hope VAC sorts this out as this might be the last CoD game I buy and not mainly for the reason of the idiot hackers (non ranked dedi, lagathon, tiny maps, stupid kill streaks) I'm pretty happy to return to MW1.
