Modern equivalent to a 8800 GTS

Hi,

The graphics card in my dads pc has failed and he's asked me to get him a replacement. I haven't had a gaming rig for a good few years now so I'm out if touch with the current selection of cards. The card that has failed is an XFX 8800GTS, what is the equivalent current card? ( AMD or Nvidia )

HD7750 or a GT650 would both be slightly better. Assuming its a 512MB version? the 320MB/640MB versions were slower due to smaller memory interface so if its one of them a HD6670 or GT640 will do.

Look for either from NVIDIA : GTX 650/GTX 460/GT 650 Ti/GTX 560Ti or GTX 660.
From AMD : HD 7770 or HD 7850.

That said, depending on the rest of his system, I would probably advise something like a 7750. There are some which don't cost much more than the 6670, and are much faster.

There are GDDR3 versions available (slower) for the 6670 / 7750 should you wish to spend less. I know the 6670 GDDR5 is faster than the 8800, though I'm not sure about the GDDR3 variant.

Look for either from NVIDIA : GTX 650/GTX 460/GT 650 Ti/GTX 560Ti or GTX 660.
From AMD : HD 7770 or HD 7850.

Any of those cards on the MM would be a bargain due to second hand pricing being great, especially on the 460. Can even get a card such as the 5870 for around £60 now on the MM!
