Modern Games - Lower Standards?

I recently purchased Call of Duty World At War and Battlefield Bad Company 2. Never, have I had so much trouble getting a game to play. CoD I had to download and install 7 update patches manually, then with a bit of googling change my sound quality to less. Even now it isn't totally reliable and I've been unable to play the singleplayer mode. BC2 I've just installed, had to let it update for quite some time then it kicks off about "side by side configuration" and doesn't work. Did the same as CoD, googled it for answers and am still unable to get it to work. Add to that I'm not getting the amazing frame rates my PC is capable of, thinking of selling the lot off and packing it in. Looks like the speed technology is moving atm my rig is already becoming out of date and that a good expectancy for a gaming pc is about 4 years. I don't suppose anyone could tell me how much this is worth and / or how to get the problems fixed?

AMD Phenom 9850 Quad Core 2.5 Ghz Black Edition
AMD HSF
Corsair XMS2 PC6400 DDR2 800Mhz 2 x 2048Mb
Corsair 850W TX PSU
Asus M3A79-T Deluxe Motherboard
ATI HIS 4870 X2
Western Digital Caviar Black 500Gb HD
DVD-RW Drive
Cooler Master Musketeer (unplugged)
Generic Case (3 Normal Fans + 1 Big)

I know how much it cost me knew and tbh I think I'm going to be sorely disappointed at how much it's worth now for how little use I've had out of it! Feels like my components are not working together?

World at War is guff... Why would you want to play it anyway?!

Sorry to hear about your troubles though, there's nothing worse than tearing out your hair to play a game, that just won't work :(

I take it all of your other games work with the CF4870s?

It's probably just software issues (including, possibly, your gfx drivers!).

I already played CoD4 and SA:MP (GTA:SA Multiplayer), sort of gave up on GTA:IV due to it being unplayable on any high settings. WaW I got recommended by a customer of mine as I'd said I wanted to try another CoD. As for the other games working with the 4870X2 (1 card, not 2 in crossfire although tbh my mobo and psu supports it) I'd say so, doesn't look like it's that which is bringing frame rates down. Graphics drivers were updated this week to 11.9.

I had huge problems with new drivers when I used to have a 4870. I rolled back to 10.4 and everything played flawlessly. Also (correct me if I'm wrong) the new driver set (11.0+) doesn't do anything for 4x series cards so it's pointless upgrade. Not sure if this is the root of the problem but I'd recommend giving 10.4 a go anyway.

The 4870, though a great card, is a little long-in-the-tooth now unfortunately. GTA4 was one of the reasons I traded mine in for a 6950r1

OK first up I am not sure why on earth you thought you needed 7(!) patches for World at War. 5 mins of research online told me what you need is:

Patch 1.5: http://www.gamershell.com/download_48562.shtml
Patch 1.5-1.6: http://www.gamershell.com/download_51122.shtml
Patch 1.6-1.7: http://www.gamershell.com/download_53468.shtml

I would recommend reinstalling the game and applying the patches in that order.

As for the gaming expectancy of a PC being 4 years that is probably a fair assessment and I don't remember it ever being any longer than that. e.g:

1992: New PC likely to be a 386 or possibly low end 486. Quake comes out in 1996. Good luck with that.
1995: New PC won't have a 3d accelerator. Quake 3 comes out in 1999, requiring a 3d card
1998: New PC will have something like a Voodoo2 or TNT card. By 2002 you would really be struggling especially on something like a V2 that doesn't even do 32bit colour
2001: New PC will likely comprise something like a 1ghz CPU and a GF3. Come 2004-5 you've gotta try and play Far Cry, Doom 3, Halflife 2, Battlefield 2 and FEAR on that (in fact I think I'm right in saying that BF2 will look completely messed up or maybe not work at all on a GF3 because it doesn't support a high enough shader version)

Ok, thanks for the input :).

My WaW came as 1.0. Rather annoying tbh! On another note I bought Far Cry 2 and thought the online multiplayer was utter rubbish.

The game is 3 years old mate and most of the patches required contain free DLC which takes us up to version 1.7. If a server (and 99% are) is hosting version 1.7, you need to have this.

World at War is guff

No it isn't!

My monitor only supports up to 1280 x 1024 :(. As for dropping another Phenom in, toyed with the idea but not entirely sure. If Intel smokes it everytime at gaming I might go to them and ditch the mobo. Sorry about the price check rule, didn't know. Then again might just sell up the lot and be done with it!

That's a tiny resolution tbh, get rid of the 4870x2 or the screen. At that res you'd be CPU limited for the most part

To be perfectly honest you have an ageing (badly) CPU and a dual graphics solution (fraught with potential problems).

Do you have a budget for any upgrades?

I can't change screens really as I'm set to move overseas soon so would be a bit foolish of me. As for the 4870X2, didn't pay that much for it and could get the cash back via eBaying it. Bought it because I knew it was a card with lots of power and that for what it cost, was much cheaper than buying a normal 4870 in terms of value. Tbh I've had this Phenom for a few years now and for the first year I didn't have enough cash for the rest of the components so that and the ram just sat in a box for ages. The 4870X2 is very recent, before that was running a 9500GT 512Mb... not ideal.

Unlucky, I have never had a game which did not install first time.

As far as BC2 goes, there have been numerous patches, uncluding one massive one. It is to be expected.

And why did you buy BC2 when if officially dies on Friday? I hope you did not get it for the multiplayer.

I did - but like Cod4 the Multiplayer on that constantly gets played? Also now getting even more lag in games so just about ready to throw the pc out the window. Think I'm going to break it for parts, should get more that way.
