How good exactly are modern iGPUs? How many years back do we have to go to get a discrete flagship GPU of equivalent performance?

I imagine there will be different answers for standard iGPUs and -G type iGPUs.

Thanks for this thread - I've just done some digging and looked into the 8700G so I could add it to my GPU Hierarchy thread - as @dave28 said the 8700G is around 780 Performance

Are the new AMD "AI" chips any good for light gaming (thinking roblox etc) or what's the best AMD "APU" currently available? Quite fancy getting something for small form factor for the kids to play games on

Non-APU chips are still a long way from playable settings

Think they are the best APU going right now but they are very expensive.

AMD claim like a 4070 but thats probably optimisic maybe 4060 mobile.

8060S, which you'll find in Strix Halo is on a par with a 4060 mobile and uses less than 50% of the power.

Doesn't make a lot of sense at the current price point -

It's a shame how little AMD seem to care about their desktop APUs now. The 8700G was a bit of a let down, especially with how god awful their non-soldered IHS chips are for temps.

They'll always be limited by the DDR speeds, but it'd be nice to see a little more effort on their flagship desktop APU.

Since they added that tiny one to the IOD so that regualr AM5 CPU has at least something then looks like priority has shifted to making the AI APU. G series sort of a middle ground but heavily limited by memory bandwidth.

Built a PC for my niece that had a 8500G in it. Initially wasn't meant for gaming just GCSE work but it soon replaced the ageing Xbox One S as choice of gaming platform. For the most it performed ok but during long gaming sessions would just green screen after a while.

It performed better than I expected for games and certainly better than any reviews suggested it would perform but in the end stuck a 9060XT in as it just wasn't up to the job

I was researching my 4300G thats in my second PC just the other day, I think it uses Vega 6 but apparently its around GTX 1030 performance :D

its a shame they havnt done a variant of the x3d chips but with a really strong igpu [strong by igpu standards i mean obviously lol im not expecting high end onboard here lol]
purely because then we could use the igpu to run lossless scaling and the dgpu to do the rendering and ray tracing etc not sure if a good enough igpu is doable though without having other knock on issues least of all pricing probably be cheaper to buy a second gpu and a regular 9800x3d for example but im sure i cant be the only person to have at least thought that might be something appealing to some people at least lol

I like to test out encoding performance when I can, I used the iGPU on my 7800X3D which only has 2 compute units or graphics core count of 2 but it still managed a stream, just the quality wasnt great, still doable but not exactly on x264 level, which on the 7800X3D the x264 encoding quality is really good at 936p using Fast preset, it actually looks better than Nvenc IMO. I think AMD iGPU's need to work on this, get them using AV1 or at least use HEVC.. its such a difference to H.264.

If this 9700X3D is real I might just buy one as I know it'll handle these tasks a tad better than what I already have :)

I just love tinkering with these things

Just to be clear, if you're buying for that reason, you're aware that the IGP is the same, right? The 7000/9000 both use RDNA2, but you need RDNA3 for AV1 support.

Yes, most of the handheld gaming PCs are built around these, they play games just fine, blimey my daughter used to play minecraft and roblox on a 3400G years ago, the Ryzen Ai 9 HX370 (crap name) with Radeon 890M is leagues ahead.

The HX370 is Zen5 so strong CPU backup for some of these games that utilize that, emulators etc.

A small performance comparison of some of my iGPUs, my 790M and 890M are not the best showing for the chips as they are in a TDP compromised steamdeck style handhelds, in a desktop environment they should be 10-15% faster.

An Ai Max chip would be 2-3x the 890M but because of its AI abilities, it has a price that goes along with it.

Yea I know its the same iGPU, but with the 9000 Series being better chips it helps running other stuff at the same time. An example would be how I set the iGPU to be used for Serato Dj Pro when I Dj while being logged into a virtual world (Second Life = loves CPU power) and doing other stuff so IPC gains etc will give me more performance in that while still using the iGPU if that makes sense.

Also Twitch does not have AV1 rolled out to everyone yet and HEVC rollout is only for a select few which is why I use x264 on my CPU, I was really surprised how well the 7800X3D does x264, my 5800X3D wasnt able to do much more than 720p without hitting 100% usage.. the 7800X3D does 936p at around 50% usage.

Edit.. upon hearing about the 9700X3D being fake, I guess I'll wait for the 10800X3D
